Fitchburg State Falls Short to Salve Regina, 4-3

BRISTOL, R.I. - Fitchburg State University fell short in their comeback bid as they fell to Salve Regina University, 4-3 in the final day of the Roger Williams Squad Locker Classic on Sunday.

Roger Williams got on the score sheet early in the contest when Richie Finizio found the back of the net in the third minute. Matthew O'Donnell found Finizio in the box off of a corner kick by Evan Dudney to give the squad an early 1-0 advantage.

Dudney stepped up in the 12th minute with a goal of his own. Nolan Brady split three Fitchburg State defenders with a pass to find Dudney up the middle. Dudney then beat the Falcons keeper to put the Seahawks up by two.

Brady then put Salve Regina up 3-0 in the 17th minute with a shot that bounced off of the left post and just rolled inside the line.

Jared Burns scored a pair of goals to pull the Falcons within one before the end of the half. His first came in the 23rd minute on a long shot outside the top of the box. He would follow that up with another goal in the 33rd minute, maneuvering around a Salve defender and the Seahawk keeper to score.

Salve almost had another goal from Mark Marino in the final minute, but was called offsides, keeping the Seahawk lead at one.

In the 61st minute, Dudney built the Salve lead back up to two with his second goal of the game. Finizio corralled a loose ball at the top of the box and sent a pass to his right to an open Dudney, who converted the shot.

The Falcons managed to come back within one eight minutes later. Burns sent a crossing pass to the middle to Matthew Beauregard, who buried the shot to the right side for his first collegiate goal of his career.

That would be the final tally of the game for both sides, as Salve held on for the win.

Michael Payan earned the win, making four saves for Salve Regina, while Alex Al-Zaibak made five stops in the losing effort for Fitchburg State.

The Falcons will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 9 as they host Elms in their home opener at 7:00 pm.
