Fitchburg State Blanked By Eastern Connecticut State, 4-0

Smith posts four save for Falcons in non-conference setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State men's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to the Warriors of Western Connecticut State in non-conference men's soccer action this evening at Elliot Field.

The nationally ranked Warriors (21st in nation) struck first in 21st minute of action, when the team's leading goal-scorer Xavier Doran capitalized on a free-kick opportunity - driving the ball low to the ground for his sixth goal of the season for the 1-0 lead.

Eastern Connecticut State doubled their lead (2-0) at the 29:02 mark as JD Stearns won a 2 on 1 foot race with a Falcon defender, before lofting a shot inside the near post for his third tally on the season.

After the break, the Warriors continued their high pace of play, as freshman forward Justin Jensen upped the advantage 15 minutes into the frame, re-directing a feed from Doran with his left boot to record his fifth score in 2015.

The Falcons would again go on the offensive as freshman forward Matt Beauregard put two shots on net that were saved by reigning Little East Conference Goalie of the week Ryan Murphy.

With 13:59 remaining the visitors padded their three goal lead as freshman forward Kevin Zeppleri redirected a shot off the foot of Jensen into the back of the net for his first collegiate tally resulting in the 4-0 final.

Throughout the contest, Eastern Connecticut State held a 17-13 advantage in shots, while also holding a slim 4-3 margin in corner kicks. In goal, freshman net-minder Connor Smith picked up four saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while Murphy stopped all three shots he faced in 79 minutes of action for the Warriors before giving way to classmate Brendan West.

Fitchburg State (5-6-0, 1-3-0 MASCAC) returns to the pitch on Saturday at it hosts the Bears of Bridgewater State University at 1:30 p.m. Eastern Connecticut State (10-2-1,, 3-0-1 LEC) will travel to the University of Southern Maine for a contest starting at 2:30 p.m.
