Framingham State Holds Off Fitchburg State, 1-0

Al-Zaibak collects six saves for Falcons in MASCAC setback

FRAMINGHAM, Mass – The Fitchburg State men's soccer dropped a tough 1-0 decision to the Rams of Framingham State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action today at the Maple Street Field.

With the win, the Rams improve to 3-3 on the year and are now 1-0 in the MASCAC, while the Falcons dip to 1-3-1 overall and are 0-1 in the conference.

The Rams struck first late in the opening stanza to tally the game's only goal. Senior Simon Appiah sent a long cross into the box to classmate Kelvin Okyere, who headed it home for the his third of the season in the 33rd minute to put Framingham State up 1-0 after 45 minutes of play.

Sophomore Ken Stahovish had a pair of chances in the second half to extend the Rams lead, but could not convert as Stahovish took a direct kick from 30 yards out and hit the post five minutes into the second stanza. 

The Falcons best chance at the equalizer came with five minutes remaining in the contest when Nicholas Masley's header in the box off a cross went just wide of the net as the Rams held on for the 1-0 final.

Throughout the contest, Framingham State held a 16-14 margin in shots, while also holding a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. In net, senior Josh Arno earned the shutout victory in net making five saves for the Rams in the complete game effort, while junior Alex Al-Zaibak turned away six shots for Fitchburg State in 90 minutes of work.

The Rams are back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Rhode Island College at 4 p.m., while Falcons travel to Regis on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
