Fitchburg State Rebounds Over Elms, 3-1

Male nets two goals for Falcons in non-conference victory

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Fitchburg State junior midfielder Ibrahima Male scored a pair of goals to lift the Falcons to a 3-1 win over the Blazers of Elms College in non-conference men's soccer action this evening at Leary Field.

In the opening frame, Fitchburg State grabbed the lead just 10:27 into the contest as Male buried a shot into the back of the net for his team-leading third marker on the year to put the Falcons up 1-0 going into the intermission.

Following the break, the Green and Gold doubled its margin (2-0) in the 62nd minute of play when sophomore Marckdonard Bastien struck for his first collegiate tally, firing a shot into the lower right corner of the net.

Elms answered roughly ten minutes later as junior forward Donald Whittle received a pass from freshman midfielder Jose Ulloa and fired a shot into the right side of net for his team-best fourth marker of the season to make the score 2-1.

The Falcons added an insurance goal at the 74:38 mark when Male connected on his second score of the contest. Male settled a pass from senior defender Connor Kneeland and blasted a shot inside the far post, resulting in the 3-1 final.

Throughout the match, Fitchburg State held a commanding 22-8 margin in shots, while the Blazers finished with a slim 8-7 advantage in corner kicks. In goal, sophomore Connor Smith made four saves for the Falcons in 90 minutes of work, while freshman Tyler Graves stopped nine shots for Elms in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (2-5-1, 0-1-1 MASCAC) returns to the pitch on Friday as it hosts the Lancers of Worcester State University for a contest starting at 7 p.m. Elms (1-9-0, 1-0-0 NECC) will host Wheelock College on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start time.
