Bastien collects lone score in MASCAC opening round

Salem, Mass. – The sixth seeded Falcons of Fitchburg State dropped a 5-1 decision to the third seeded Vikings of Salem State University this evening in opening round action of the 2018 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's soccer post-season tournament at Alumni Field.

How It Happened

Salem State opened the scoring at the 25:23 mark as sophomore Felipe Montiel (Maracaibo, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio) connected on his seventh tally on the year for the 1-0 lead before the Vikings doubled their advantage nine minutes later when classmate Edwin Demoya (Salem, Mass./Salem) netted his fourth goal of the season for the 2-0 lead.

Trailing 3-0, Fitchburg State cut into the deficit in the 41st minute of play as junior Marckdonard Bastien (Worcester, Mass./Worcester North) blasted a shot into the upper right corner for his third tally of the 2018 campaign to make the score 3-1 going into the break.

Following the intermission, the Vikings added an insurance marker at the 70:28 mark when junior Grace Dos Santos (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) netted his third goal on the year, resulting in the 5-1 final.

Inside the Numbers

This evening's contest will the 43rd meeting between the two squads on the pitch with the Falcons currently 9-32-2 when taking on the Vikings.

Two teams had split the previous eight contests (4-4-0) with Salem State coming away with a 2-0 victory in the last meeting earlier this season at Alumni Field.

Salem State finished with a 14-7 margin in shots, while also a holding an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

In goal, sophomore Branton Abbett (Jasper, Ind./Jasper) stopped three shots for the Falcons in the setback, while junior Christopher Jimenez (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) made three saves for the Vikings in the victory.
