Fitchburg State Shines At Tufts And BU

Stalters places fifth overall in the 60m hurdles with DIII NE qualifying time of 8.72 seconds

Medford, Mass. – The Fitchburg State men's indoor track and field team returned to action this afternoon, finishing 12th with a totals of 14,50 points at the 2018 Branwen Smith-King Invitational, hosted by Tufts University, while select members also competed at the 2018 John Thomas Terrier Classic, hosted by Boston University.

At Tufts, junior Cameron Stalters (Norton, Mass.) led the way for the Falcons, placing fifth overall in the 60 meter hurdles with a DIII New England qualifying time of 8.72 seconds, while freshman Brandon Amello (Rowley, Mass.) turned in a DIII NE qualifying time of 51.65 seconds in the 400 meter with a fifth place effort.

Senior Ben Sattiewhite (Salem, Mass.) was also solid for the Green and Gold, finishing sixth overall in the high jump with a DIII New England qualifying jump of 1.88 meters, while newcomer Christian McWhinnie-Armstead (Lowell, Mass.) placed ninth in the high jump with a DIII NE qualifying mark of 1.88m.

In the 1000 meter, freshman Jacob Movsessian (New Ipswich, N.H.), senior Mark Tonelli (Ayer, Mass.) and newcomer Anthony Ortwein (Fitchburg, Mass..) notched MASCAC qualifying times of 2:53.32, 2:54.83 and 2:55.21 after placing 15th, 16th and 17th respectively, while Amello (23.37) and sophomore Zachary Joseph (Hyde Park, Mass.) finished fifth and 23rd respectively in the 200 meter with post-season qualifying times of 23.37 seconds and 24.63 seconds..

Junior Austin Landress (Winchendon, Mass.) and freshman James Casale (Wakefield, Mass.) notched MASCAC qualifying times of 2:30.32 and 2:31.83 in the 800 meter, while Joseph and freshman Nathaniel Rogers (Foxboro, Mass.) added post-season qualifying times of 7.50 seconds and 7.63 seconds in the 60 meter dash.

In the mile, Movsessian turned in a MASCAC qualifying time of 4:42.88 with a 15th place finish, while junior Stephen McCall (Brockton, Mass.) placed 22nd overall in the event with a post-season qualifying time of 4:52.28.

In the field, senior Joseph Bernardini (Lowell, Mass.) placed 13th in the shot put (12.61m) and 15th in the weight throw to qualify for MASCAC's in both events, while junior Brendan Courtney (North Attleboro, Mass.) added an 18th place effort in the shot put with a post-season qualifying toss of 11.83 meters.

Freshman Eric Desgroseilliers (Fitchburg, Mass.) rounded out the top Falcon efforts on the afternoon, finishing 27th overall in the weight throw with a toss of 8.64 meters.

At Boston University, senior Brian Amaral (Tewksbury, Mass.) turned in a DIII New England qualifying time of 15:12.85 in the 5000 meter, while classmate Jake Hastings (Phillipston, Mass.) posted a DIII NE qualifying time of 4:19.94 in the mile. Junior Anthony Darrigo (Tewksbury, Mass.) put forth a solid effort as well notching a MASCAC qualifying time of 4:41.71 in the mile.

The Fitchburg State men's track and field team returns to action next weekend as it completes at Wesleyan University for meet starting at 10:00 A.M.
