Falcons Place Third At MASCAC Indoor Track Championships

Sacramone, Digman, McWhinnie-Armstead & Bernadeau qualify for DIII NE Championships

Northampton, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University men's indoor track & field team placed third overall with a total of 109 points at the 2019-20 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's indoor Track Championships this afternoon, hosted by Smith College.

How It Happened

Junior Christian McWhinnie-Armstead (Lowell, Mass.) led the way for the Falcons, placing first overall in the high jump with a DIII NE qualifying mark of 2.00 meters, while freshman Adam Digman (Winchendon, Mass.) qualified for the DIII New England Championships in the 60 meter hurdles with a third place time of 8.64 seconds.

Newcomer Beau Bernadeau (North Andover, Mass.) was also solid for the Green and Gold, finishing second in the shotput with a DIII NE qualifying toss of 13.80 meters, while classmate Eric Shimiyimana (Worcester, Mass.) finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 13.19 meters to also qualify for the 2020 DIII New England Championships.

In the 5000 meter, junior Jacob Movsessian (New Ipswich, N.H.) (15:35.04), freshman Samuel Flint (Metheun, Mass.) (16:28.58) and classmate Matthew Catarius (Shrewsbury, Mass.) (16:47.20) placed second, seventh and eighth, while junior Asante Monteiro (Fall River, Mass.) turned in a fifth place effort in the 60 meter dash with time of 7.18 seconds.

Junior Timothy Sheehy (Wakefield, R.I.) turned in a solid time of 4:28.87 with a third place finish in the mile, while in the 800 meter, sophomore Trevor Field (Shirley, Mass.) and newcomer Tyssen LaBombard (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) placed second and seventh respectively with times of 2:02.32 and 2:09.43.

In the 3000 meter, Movsessian (2nd), Sheehy (4th), junior Joe Weston (Middleton, Mass.) (6th) and Flint (ninth) posted times of 9:16.64, 9:31.00, 9:40.89 and 9:56.52, while Monteiro added a sixth place time of 23.47 seconds in the 200 meter.

Freshman Romeo Fabre (Leominster, Mass.) (6th) and classmate Chris Morales (Lynn, Mass.) (9th) registered times of 1:30.52 and 1:34.01 in the 600 meter, while sophomore Nicholas Sachetta (Billerica, Mass.) placed second in the 1000 meter with time of 2:42.49.

In the 400 meter, freshmen Conor Dandy (Westminster, Mass.) (53.98) and Nathaniel Felix (Worcester, Mass.) (57.22) finished fifth and seventh respectively, while the 4x200 meter relay team of Monteiro, Morales, Felix and newcomer Joshua Ilori added a second place time of 1:51.25.

Newcomer Benjamin Sacramone (Hubbardston, Mass.) (5th) and Zion Barber-Amado (6th) posted stellar times of 9.21 seconds and 9.27 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles, while Monteiro turned in a fifth place time of 7.18 seconds in the 60 meter dash.

In the field, Sacramone (1.85m) and freshman Brandon Patanao (Marlborough, Mass.) (1.80m) placed fourth and seventh in the high jump, while in the long jump, Shimiyimana (5th) and Sacramone (7th) registered marks of 6.16 meters and 5.98 meters.

In the shotput, Digman (9th) and freshman Zanthius Collins (Franklin, Mass.) (10th) posted tosses of 11.78 meters and 11.55 meters, while newcomer Jalen Simpson put forth a solid seventh jump of 11.89 meters in the triple jump.

Rounding out the top efforts for the Green and Gold on the afternoon were sophomore Cody Soderlund (Middleborough, Mass.) and Digman, who finished seventh and eighth in the pole vault with vaults of 3.35 meters and 3.00 meters respectively.

Head coach Jim Jellison said "We finished a strong third as we have only one senior on the team and we will only get better." "Our distance guys scored 13 points and all of whom set PR's today as did Digman, Monteiro and Soderlund." Jellison continued.
