Fitchburg State Opens At Emory & Tufts

Stalters takes top honors in the javelin with Open New England qualifying toss of 62.95m

Medford, Mass. – The Fitchburg State men's outdoor track and field team opened its 2018 campaign this afternoon, placing 17th overall at the 2018 Emory Classic with a total of 16 points, while also placing 15th overall at the 2018 Tufts Snowflake Classic with 20 points.

At Emory, junior Cameron Stalters (Norton, Mass.) claimed top honors in the javelin with an Open New England qualifying toss of 62.95 meters, while senior Ben Sattiewhite (Salem, Mass.) finished third overall in the high jump with a DIII New England qualifying mark of 1.95 meters.

At Tufts, sophomore Zachary Joseph (Hyde Park, Mass.) qualified for MASCAC's in the 100 meter (11.71) and the 200 meter (24.02), while freshman Brandon Amello (Rowley, Mass.) notched a post-season qualifying time of 51.37 seconds in the 400 meter with a 14th place finish.

In the 800 meter, newcomer Timothy Sheehy (Wakefield, Mass.) and senior Liam Eble (Ridge, N.Y.) notched post-season qualifying times of 2:14.93 and 2:16.86, while the 4x100 meter relay team of freshman Asante Monteiro (Fall River, Mass.), classmate Matthew Goss, senior Tapiwa Mungate (Dracut, Mass.) and Amello turned in a 7th place time of 45.21 seconds to qualify for MASCAC's.

The 4x800 meter relay team of senior Jake Hastings (Phillipston, Mass.), classmate Mark Tonelli (Ayer, Mass.), junior Anthony Darrigo (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Amello took top honors with a MASCAC qualifying time of 8:32.75, while in the 1500 meter, Hastings (3rd) and Tonelli turned in post-season qualifying times of 4:04.74 and 4:27.21.

In the field, freshman Christian McWhinnie-Armstead (Lowell, Mass.) posted a DIII New England qualifying jump of 1.88 meters in the high jump with a seventh place finish, while classmate Keenan Doyle (Lancaster, Mass.) placed ninth in the pole vault with a post-season qualifying vault of 3.50 meters,

In the shotput, senior Joseph Bernardini (Lowell, Mass.) and sophomore Kyle Nelson (Wilmington, Mass.) placed 12th and 17th respectively with MASCAC qualifying tosses of 11.94m and 11.63m, while McWhinnie-Armstead added a 13th place effort in the triple jump with a post-season qualifying mark of 12.21 meters.

Freshman Erick Viana (Peabody, Mass.) posted a post-season qualifying toss of 26.44 meter in the Javelin, while Bernadini added two more MASCAC qualifying marks in the discus (33.00m) and the hammer throw (29.64m).

In the 5000 meter, freshman Jacob Movsessian (New Ipswich, N.H) placed 25th overall with a MASCAC qualifying time of 15:59.87, while Darrigo added a post-season qualifying time of 16:16.89 in the event as well.

The Fitchburg State men's outdoor track and field team returns to action next weekend as the Falcons hosts their annual Jim Sheehan Memorial Alumni Invitational on Saturday, April 7th at Elliot Field, starting at 10:00 AM.
