McWhinnie-Armstead takes top honors in the high jump with Open NE qualifying mark of 2.07m

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University men's outdoor track & field team placed 4th overall with a total of 63 points as the Falcons hosts its annual Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational this afternoon at Elliot Field.

How It Happened

Sophomore Christian McWhinnie-Armstead (Lowell, Mass.) led the way for the Falcons, taking top honors in the high jump with an Open New England qualifying mark of 2.07 meters, while junior Zachary Buckland (Billerica, Mass.) collected MASCAC qualifying marks in the javelin (48.72m), long jump (6.02m) and pole vault (2.60m) after placing seventh, tenth and seventh respectively.

In the 1500 meter, senior Joseph Darrigo (Tewksbury, Mass.) (4:18.23) and sophomore Timothy Sheehy (Wakefield, R.I.) (4:28.72) finished third and ninth to qualify for MASCAC's, while in the 100 meter, sophomore Asante Monteiro (Fall River, Mass.) and junior Zachary Joseph (Hyde Park, Mass.) placed third and ninth respectively with post-season qualifying times of 11.44 seconds and 11.69 seconds.

Sheehy posted a post-season qualifying time of 2:09.62 with an eighth place effort in the 800 meter, while senior Austin Landress (Winchendon, Mass.) (1:01.16) and Darrigo (1:04.66) finished sixth and eighth in the 400 meter hurdles to qualify for MASCAC's.

In the 5000 meter, sophomore Jacob Movsessian (New Ipswich, N.H.) finished third overall with a MASCAC qualifying time of 15:56.35, while Joseph added a post-season qualifying time of 23.65 seconds in the 200 meter with an eighth place finish.

In the field, freshman Brandon McNeil (Dartmouth, Mass.) posted a MASCAC qualifying mark of 6.05 meters in the long jump with a ninth place effort, while junior Wilkerson Pierre (Cambridge, Mass.) finished fifth in the triple jump with a post-season qualifying jump of 12.58 meters.

In the pole vault, newcomer Cody Soderlund (Middleborough, Mass.) placed sixth with a post-season qualifying vault of 3.20 meters, while senior Brendan Courtney (North Attleboro, Mass.) netted a pair of MASCAC qualifying marks in the shotput (12.72m) and in the hammer throw (39.05m) to round out the top Falcon performances on the afternoon.
