Buckland qualifies for DIII NE's in Decathlon with score of 4942

New London, Conn. – The Fitchburg State University men's outdoor track & field team placed 15th overall with a total of 12 points at the 2019 Silfen Invitational, hosted by Connecticut College on Friday and Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

Junior Zachary Buckland (Billerica, Mass.) placed sixth overall in the decathlon with a DIII New England qualifying score of 4942, while sophomore Jacob Movsessian (New Ipswich, N.H.) finished tenth in the 10000 meter with a DIII NE qualifying time of 33:08.45. Senior Joseph Darrigo (Tewksbury, Mass.) was also solid for the Green and Gold, finishing 12th in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:58.10 to also qualify for DIII NE's.

The 4x100 meter relay team of junior Zachary Joseph (Hyde Park, Mass.), senior Deion Ducoste (Boston, Mass.), classmate Austin Landress (Winchendon, Mass.) and freshman Cody Soderlund (Middleborough, Mass.) turned in an eighth place time of 46.57, while in the 1500 meter, sophomore Timothy Sheehy (Wakefield, R.I.) posted a time of 4:28.56.

In the 100 meter, Joseph and junior Marvin Lovett III (Springfield, Mass.) posted times of 11.62 seconds and 11.63 seconds respectively, while newcomer Nicholas Sachetta (Billerica, Mass.) notched a strong time of 55.07 seconds in the 400 meter.

Joseph collected his second MASCAC qualifying time on the day after turning in a time of 24.22 seconds in the 200 meter, while sophomore Joe Weston (Middleton, Mass.) registered a post-season qualifying time of 11:04.07 in the 3000 meter steeplechase.

In the field, sophomore Erick Viana (Peabody, Mass.) notched a MASCAC qualifying toss of 28.46 meters in the javelin, while in the triple jump, newcomer Brandon McNeil (Dartmouth, Mass.) and junior Wilkerson Pierre (Cambridge, Mass.) placed seventh and 12th respectively with post-season qualifying marks of 12.82m and 12.45m.

Senior Brendan Courtney (North Attleboro, Mass.) notched a pair of MASCAC qualifying marks in the shot put (11.79m) and hammer throw (33.96m) after placing 12th and 14th respectively, while Soderlund rounded out the top Falcon efforts on the day with a MASCAC qualifying vault of 2.90 meters after finishing 14th overall in the pole vault.
