Fitchburg State Shines At Shriners Invitational

Men place 14th with 368 points; Women collect 594 points for 22nd place

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. (September 21, 2013) – The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled to UMass Dartmouth this afternoon, competing in the 2013 Shriners Invitational. The men placed 14th overall with 368 points, while the women finished 22nd overall with 594 points.

The Fitchburg State men fared well at the 2013 Shriners Invitational, beating out the other four MASCAC teams in the field, placing 14th overall with 368 points. Junior Eric Ouellette (Ashburnham, Mass.) continued his strong running, placing 18th overall with an outstanding five mile  UMass Dartmouth course time of 26:19, while freshman Vincent Tevnan (Boscawen, N.H.) turned in a time of 28:05 for a 65th place finish.

Senior Larry Teague (Tyngsboro, Mass.) (97th) also ran strong with a time of 28:50, while sophomore Tim Allen (Methuen, Mass.) placed 102nd overall with a time of 28:58. Junior Jim Quinlan (North Andover, Mass,), freshman Colen Stack (Greenfield, Mass.) and classmate Matt Cuomo (Carlisle, Mass.) wrapped up the men’s top seven with times of 29:04, 29:11 and 29:52 respectively.

Sophomore Sam Carroll (Brockton, Mass.) guided the men’s sub varsity team to an eighth place effort (213 points), posting a solid time of 29:12, while classmate Zach Levenson (Canton, Mass.) also ran well. notching a time of 30:26 over the five mile layout.

On the women’s side, sophomore Erica Mallozzi (Gardner, Mass.) led the Fitchburg State varsity squad in the 5K race, earning the top Falcon spot (91st) with a time of 21:06, while senior Alyson Moreau (Barrington, R.I.) finished a close second with a time of 21:30. Junior Braila Roy ((Hyannis, Mass.) also turned in a solid time of 21:52, while classmate Jenae Harrison (Sioux Falls, S.D.) registered a time of 22:20.

Capping the Falcons top seven were senior Samantha Wilkinson (Wakefield, Mass.), freshman Kelly McCarthy (Assonet, Mass.) and sophomore Elizabeth Ward (Ashby, Mass.) with times of 22:33, 22:41 and 23:02 respectively.

Sophomore Jessica Mangan (Everett, Mass.) guided the Fitchburg State women’s sub varsity team to a ninth place finish (267 points) with a 51st place finish (22:49), while junior Ebony Schuerman (Fitchburg, Mass.) ran well with a time of 23:43, nearly three minutes faster than last year’s race. Newcomer Grace Morrissey (Millis, Mass.) turned in a solid effort, with a time of 24:13, while classmate Taylor Deschenes finished with a time of 24:51.

Rounding the top six Falcons in the sub varsity race were seniors Katelyn Sletterink (Wakefield, Mass.), and Stephanie Irvin (Malden, Mass.) with times of 25:56 and 26:04 respectively over the 5K course.

The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s cross country teams will be back in action next Saturday as it competes at the Worcester City Meet at 11 a.m.
