Falcons Excel At James Early Invitational & All-NE Championships

Fitchburg State paced by Amaral and Weston at duel meets

Westfield, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University men's cross country competed in both the 22nd annual James Early Memorial Cross Country Invite at Stanley Park in Westfield as well as the 2017 All-New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston this afternoon.

How It Happened

At the 2017 James Early Memorial Cross Country Invitational, the Falcons were led by freshman Joe Weston (Middleton, Mass.), who placed 89th overall with a time of 29:00.11, while classmate Timothy Sheehy (Wakefield, Mass.) followed in 98th with a time of 29:14.33 over the 8K course.

Newcomer Anthony Ortwein (Fitchburg, Mass.) was next for the Falcons, turning a time of 29:37.07, while sophomore Brandon DiGregorio (Somerville, Mass.) rounded out the top Fitchburg State efforts with a time of 30:07.15.

At the 2017 All-New England Championships, senior Brian Amaral (Tewksbury, Mass.) posted a time of 26:05.3 with a 37th place effort, while classmate Jake Hastings (Phillipston, Mass.) entered the chute in 78th with a time of 27:07 over the 8K layout.

Junior Anthony Darrigo (Tewksbury, Mass.) was next for the Green and Gold, registering a time of 27:34.2, while fellow junior Joseph Darrigo (Tewksbury, Mass.) closed out the top Falcon runners on the afternoon with a time of 27:98.6

Inside the Numbers

Fitchburg State placed fifth overall at last year's James Early Memorial Invite with a total of 207 points, while it did not compete at last year's All-New England Championships.

Trinity claimed top honors at the James Early Invite after amassing a total of 74 points, while Stonehill College took the top spot at the All-New England Championships after accruing 119 total points.

Junior Sam Brunnette (Newport, Vt.) of Plymouth State University placed first overall at the 2017 James Early invite with a time of 25:35, while junior Leakey Kipkosgei (Kapsabet, Kenya) of American International took home top honors at the 2017 All-New England Championships with a time of 24:51.3
