Falcons fall 10-0 in game one; suffer 12-4 setback in game two

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (April 18, 2009) - The Fitchburg State softball team dropped a pair to Bridgewater State College this afternoon in MASCAC action. The Falcons suffered a 10-0 setback in game one, before falling 12-4 in game two.

In game one, Fitchburg State was limited to only one hit as sophomore Karen Skoczylas (Palmer, Mass./Palmer) connected for a double to left center field to finish the game 1-for-2. Sophomore Tracey Sanko (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) led the Bridgewater State attack, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 with two homeruns, three runs scored and four RBI, while senior Allie LeBlanc (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) hit 2-for-3 with a homerun, two runs scored and one RBI.

Bridgewater State touched for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and never looked back en route to its 18th victory of the season. LeBlanc led the Bears rally with a solo homerun, while senior Rachel Sprague (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) belted an RBI single. The Bears added a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning on Sanko's first homerun of the contest, before sealing the victory with a five-run fifth capped by a three-run blast by Sanko.

Freshman Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) suffered the setback for the Falcons (2-12), allowing ten runs (six earned) on 11 hits while striking out three. Senior Alyssa Verronneau (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) earned the victory for the Bears (8-4), tossing a one-hitter over five innings, while fanning seven.

Senior Alicia Rocc registered a team-
best two hits in game two.

In game two, senior Alicia Rocco (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) led the Fitchburg State offense with a 2-for-3 performance, while sophomore Lauren Donell (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) finished 1-for-2 with a double, one run scored and one RBI. Skoczylas was also strong for the Falcons, hitting 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI.

Junior Lauren Cucinota (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and LeBlanc combined for a perfect 6-for-6 performance to lead the Bridgewater State game two attack, totaling five runs scored and eight RBI. LeBlanc paced the attack with a double, homerun and a game-high five RBI, while Cucinotta added three base-hits, three runs scored and three RBI.

Bridgewater State opened the contest with an early 3-0 lead after one inning of play, but Fitchburg State rallied back with three runs in the top of the second to knot the score at 3-3. Donell led the Falcon charge with an RBI double in the frame, while freshman Amanda Quin (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) belted a run scoring single.

The Bears responded immediately, registering nine runs over the final four innings to clinch its sixth MASCAC victory. Cucinotta started the Bears rally with a two RBI single in the second inning, while LeBlanc capped the Bridgewater State scoring with an RBI double in the fifth that plated two.

Sophomore Bethany Stone (Wells, Maine/Wells) suffered the loss for the Falcons (2-12), yielding eight earned runs and seven hits over three innings of work. Junior Jamie Ducinski (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) picked up the victory for the Bears, allowing one earned run on four hits in four innings of relief.

Fitchburg State (4-24, 1-9 MASCAC) returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Fisher College at 4 p.m. Bridgewater State (19-9, 6-2 MASCAC) will travel to MCLA at Monday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
