Trzcinski connects for two hits in Falcons setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. (March 31, 2009) - Junior Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass./South) registered a perfect 2-for-2 performance as Fitchburg State fell to Plymouth State, 13-1 in non-conference action this afternoon.

Trzcinski led the Fitchburg State offense with a team-high two hits, including a double and one run scored, while classmates Meghan Callahan (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) and Lauren Donell (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) chipped in with one hit apiece.

Sophomore Laura Kaplan (Franklin, N.H./Franklin) ignited the Plymouth State attack going 2-for-3 with a grand slam and four RBI. Junior Sammi Romeno (Kingston, N.H./Sanborn Regional) was also solid, hitting a perfect 3-for-3, while sophomore Andrea Pydynkowski (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) chipped in with a 2-for-3 performance and a solo homerun.

Fitchburg State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Callahan, but the lead was short-lived as Plymouth State plated a pair of runs in the top of the second frame to take a 2-1 advantage. The Panthers continued to muster the offense, tacking on nine more runs in the third inning, paced by the grand slam of Kaplan and the solo shot of Pydynkowski.

Senior hurler Courtney MacFarland (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) earned the win for Plymouth State, allowing one run (zero earned) on four hits and striking out three in four innings of work. Sophomore right-hander Bethany Stone (Wells, Maine/Wells) took the loss for the Falcons, allowing 11 runs (two earned) on ten hits in three innings of work.

Fitchburg State (3-17, 0-2 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it travels to Curry College for a non-conference double-header at 2 p.m. Plymouth State (10-3, 2-0 LEC) is back in action on Thursday as well when it travels to Salem State at 5 p.m.
