Fitchburg State Loses A Pair At Gene Cusic Classic

Falcons fall 20-1 in game one; suffer 3-0 setback in game two

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 10, 2009) - The Fitchburg State softball team suffered a pair of setbacks in a Monday afternoon double-header at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. The Falcons suffered a 20-1 setback to Drew College in game one, while falling to St. Mary's, 3-0 in game two.

Drew 20, Fitchburg State 1 (5 innings)

Junior Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass./South) led the Fitchburg state offensive attack in game one, hitting a perfect 3-for-3 with three base knocks. Sophomore Karen Skoczylas (Palmer, Mass./Palmer) was also solid, finishing 1-for-3, while sophomore Meghan Callahan (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) chipped in with a base-hit.

Sophomore Bethany Stone (Wells, Maine/Wells) suffered her second loss of the season in the complete game effort for the Falcons. Stone yielded 20 runs on ten hits, while striking out six and walking only four.

Trzcinski was also solid in Fitchburg State's second contest of the day, hitting 2-for-3 with two base-hits, while senior Alicia Rocco (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) notched two singles. Freshman Amanda Quin (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) posted one hit to aid the Falcons.

Freshman Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) had a solid outing in the circle for the Falcons, scattering three runs on two hits  in seven innings of work. The rookie hurler notched two strikeouts in her second collegiate contest, while walking none.

Fitchburg State (0-4, 0-0) will be in action on Thursday as its battles in a double header vs. Rensslaer and Wooster starting at 1 p.m.
