Fitchburg State Falls At Gene Cusic Tournament

Falcons blanked in game one, 7-0; downed 9-3 in game two

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 12, 2009) - The Fitchburg State softball team suffered a pair of setbacks in a Friday afternoon double-header at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. The Falcons were blanked in game one, 7-0 by Eastern Nazarene, while falling to St. Joseph's (Me) 9-3 in game two.

Junior Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass./South) paced the Fitchburg State attack for the third straight game, registering a 2-for-3 performance with two singles, while freshman Amanda Quin (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) hit 1-for-3 with a base knock. Sophomores Lauren Donell (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) and Stephanie Forest (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) chipped in with one base-hit each.

Freshman Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) suffered her fourth loss on the season (0-4), hurling a complete game, seven-hitter. Cousins yielded all seven runs, while striking out two and walking three.

Freshman Ashley McKinnon (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) led the Fitchburg State game two attack, finishing 1-for-3 with a double, while senior Alicia Rocco (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) and Donell recorded one RBI apiece.

Sophomore slinger Bethany Stone (Wells, Maine/Wells) suffered the loss for the Falcons (1-3), allowing all nine runs in her complete game effort. Stone limited St. Joseph's to only four hits in the contest, while striking on one and walking a pair.

Fitchburg State (1-7, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again next Saturday as it hosts Becker College at 12 p.m.
