Curry Shoots Past Fitchburg State

Trzcinski hits a perfect 6-for-6 in Falcon doubleheader setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. (March 31, 2009) - The Fitchburg State softball suffered a pair of losses to Curry State in non-conference action this afternoon. The Colonels posted an 8-0 shutout in game one before battling to a 13-10 victory in the nightcap.

Falcons doubleheader with Curry College.

Senior Lauren Tobey (Quincy, Mass./Quincy) led the Curry College game one offense, hitting 2-for-5 with a homerun, two runs scored and a game-high five RBI, while classmate Kristen Jackman (Stoughton, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) was also solid with two hits, including a homerun and one RBI. Junior Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass./South) paced the Fitchburg State attack with a perfect 2-for-2 performance, while sophomore Meghan Callahan (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) added one hit.

Curry opened the contest with an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning paced by the lead-off homerun of Jackman. The Colonels added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth frame, before exploding for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to clinch the victory. Tobey paced the Colonels four run rally with a grand slam homerun, her seventh of the season.

Freshman Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) suffered the loss for Fitchburg State (1-8), yielding eight runs (five earned) on eight hits in four innings of work. Sophomore Amanda Peters (E. Bridgewater, Mass./E. Bridgewater) earned the victory for Curry (2-3), holding the Falcons scoreless over five innings while allowing only three hits.

In game two, Fitchburg State exploded for 16 hits paced by the bat of Trzcinski. The junior leader registered another perfect performance, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Sophomore Karen Skoczylas (Palmer, Mass./Palmer) turned in a solid game two effort, hitting 2-for-5 with a homerun (1), one run scored and three RBI, while classmate Lauren Donell (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) chipped in with three hits, including a double.

Curry jumped out to an early 13-4 lead after three complete innings, but Fitchburg State battled back with three runs in the top of the fourth to cut the Colonel lead to six. Freshman Ashley McKinnon (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) led the Falcons three run rally with an RBI double, while Callahan belted a run scoring single.

The Falcons continued their offensive momentum with runs in the last four frames, but the Colonels held-off the Fitchburg State comeback to earn their 12th victory of the season. Freshman Jillian Nemcovich (Franklin, N.H./Bishop Brady) earned the victory for Curry, hurling 2.1 innings of relief. Sophomore Bethany Stone (Wells, Maine/Wells) took the loss for the Falcons in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (3-16, 0-2 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Salem State College at 12 p.m. Curry (12-8, 4-2 TCCC) will travel to Wentworth on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
