Falcons post 10-6 victory in game one; complete sweep with 6-4 win in game two

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 13, 2010) - The Fitchburg State Softball team posted a season-sweep over Johnson and Wales University, taking a pair of games in non-conference action this afternoon. The Falcons posted a 10-6 victory in game one, before topping the Wildcats, 6-4 in game two.

Freshman Jill Moses collected a double
and two triples in game one.

In the first contest, Fitchburg State produced ten runs and ten hits as the Falcons notched their fifth victory of the season.

Freshmen Jill Moses (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) and Danielle Correia (W. Bridgewater, Mass./W. Bridgewater) paved the way for Fitchburg State, combining for six hits, five runs scored and three RBI in the contest. Moses sparked the Falcons with a 3-for-4 performance, including a double, two triples, two runs scored and one RBI, while Correia added a double, two singles and a trio of runs scored.

The Falcons used a five-run fifth to break open a four run game (5-1) and grab a commanding 10-1 lead. Sophomore Ashley McKinnon (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) gave the Falcons an early boost, connecting for her first homerun of the season in the opening inning, while Moses belted a pair of triples in the third and fifth frames. Correia was also strong in the rally with a pair of RBI hits, while junior Megan Jenkins (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) added a RBI.

In the circle, sophomore Alli Cousin (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) improved to t2-3 on the season, tossing a complete game for the Falcons. Cousins scattered 14 hits throughout the game, surrendering six runs (four earned), while striking out a pair. Freshman Rachel Marino (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) suffered the loss for the Wildcats (5-12), turning in a seven inning, ten hit performance with three K’s.

In the second contest, Fitchburg State jumped out to an early five run lead and held off a late Johnson and Wales surge to post its sixth victory of the season. The Falcons used a balanced attack in the nightcap as seven individuals registered base-knocks.

The duo of Moses and Correia struck again for the Falcons, combining for two more hits, two runs scored and two RBI, while senior Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass./South) went 1-for-2 with a single, two walks and two runs scored.

 Fitchburg State struck first, opening the contest with five runs over the first three innings. Sophomore Kelly Cummings (Natick, Mass./Natick) sparked the Falcons two-run first inning with a RBI double, while Moses, Correia and freshman Steph Keller (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) ignited Fitchburg State’s third inning rally with three consecutive RBI hits.

Johnson and Wales mustered a late game surge with four runs over the last two innings, but Fitchburg State starter Nicole Monroe (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) shut the door on the Wildcats comeback for her third victory of the season (3-6). Monroe went the distance for the Falcons, allowing only six hits and striking out a season-high eight, while Wildcat pitcher Amanda Rae Sullivan (E. Granby, Conn./E. Granby) took the loss (3-13) with six runs on seven hits and five walks.

Fitchburg State (6-14, 0-4 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it travels to Plymouth State University at 3:30 p.m. Johnson and Wales (8-25, 3-9 GNAC) will visit Rhode Island College on Thursday at 4 p.m.
