Falcons suffer 3-0 setback in game one; rebound with 10-2 victory in game two

In game one, Regis pounded out eight hits and notched three early runs to hold off Fitchburg State and collected a 3-0 victory. The Pride received a solid effort from sophomore hurler Kendra Abrams (Acushnet, Mass./Bishop Connolly) who posted her third victory of the season (3-3). Abrams tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout, yielding only no walks throughout the contest and striking out one.

Junior Shannon Hurley (Billerica, Mass./Arlington Catholic) led the Regis offensive front, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with three singles, while sophomore Caitlin Luquet (Walnut Creek, Calif./Carondelet) and junior Hope Benjamin (Rochester, Mass./Old Rochester) each added one hit and one RBI.

Although the Falcon bats were silenced, Fitchburg State sophomore Kelly Cummings (Natick, Mass./Natick) registered two hits in the game, hitting 2-for-3 with a single and a double.

The Pride jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of play and added a pair of insurance runs in the third as an RBI ground out by Luquet and a RBI double by Benjamin  brought the Pride lead to three. Fitchburg State threatened in the second inning as Cummings led off with a double, but the Pride kept the Fitchburg State bats at bay for the remainder of the frame to end the threat.

Senior pitcher Bethany Stone (Wells, Maine/Wells) suffered the loss for the Falcons (1-5), allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits. The veteran fire-baller only walked one batter and struck out a pair in the complete game effort.

In game two, the Fitchburg State bats came alive, rebounding for ten runs on 11 hits to earn a two-game split with Regis. Senior Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass./South) paced the Falcons game two attack with a perfect 4-for-4 effort, including a triple, two runs scored and one RBI, while freshman Jill Moses (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) belted a homerun and added a game-high four RBI. Sophomore Ashley McKinnon (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) was also strong, chipping in with a pair of hits, two runs scored and one RBI.

In the third frame, Fitchburg State broke open a tight, 0-0 contest, scoring four runs on three hits and one Pride error. Junior Meghan Jenkins (Dedham, Mass./Dedham), Cummings and Moses each collected RBI’s, while Trzcinski kicked-started the rally with a leadoff triple to right center.

The Falcons doubled up their lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the fourth highlighted by Moses’ first collegiate homerun. McKinnon ignited the second Falcon surge with a RBI single, before Moses stepped and laced a three-bomb for the Falcons eight run cushion.

Regis would cut the lead to 8-2 in the in the fifth on RBI’s by Luquet and Benjamin, but Fitchburg State ended the contest early with two runs in the fifth. Junior Nicole Monroe (Townsend, Mass./N. Middlesex) picked up the win for  Fitchburg State (2-5), pitching the complete game. She allowed only two runs on five hits, while striking out three.

Fitchburg State (4-12, 0-2 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it hosts MASCAC rival Salem State for a double-header at 12 p.m. Regis College (4-19, 1-5 TCCC) will host Roger Williams University tomorrow at 4 p.m.
