Fitchburg State Drops A Pair In Florida

Falcons fall 11-3 in game one; suffer 3-0 shutout in nightcap

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 17, 2011) – The Fitchburg State softball team suffered a pair of losses this afternoon, falling to Bethel University 11-3 in game one and Wisconsin Superior, 3-0 in game two.

In game one, Fitchburg State surrendered 20 hits and 11 runs, suffering its fourth loss of the season, 11-3 to Bethel University.

Sophomore Melissa Wadman (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) and classmate Alycia McGrail (N. Brookfield, Mass./N. Brookfield) paved the way for the Falcons offensively, posting two hits apiece, while senior Nicole Monroe (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) added a single and a double at the plate. Senior Lauren Donell (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) was also strong, chipping in with a triple and one RBI.

On the rubber, Monroe suffered the loss for the Falcons, yielding five runs (two earned) and four hits over five innings of work. Junior Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) also took the mound in relief, allowing two runs on three hits, while freshman Nancy Henry (Forestdale, Mass./Sandwich) worked an inning with one earned run allowed.

Wisconsin Lutheran 3, Fitchburg State 0

In game two, Fitchburg State was held scoreless, as Wisconsin Superior manufactured three runs on three hits and seven errors for the 3-0 victory.

Henry worked the first five innings for the Falcons, suffering the loss with three runs allowed (zero earned). Henry limited Wisconsin Lutheran to only three hits in the contest, but seven costly errors proved to be the difference for the Falcons. Freshman Jessica Drago (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) worked the sixth inning for Fitchburg State, shutting down the Warriors offense with two strikeouts and no hits allowed.

Fitchburg State (4-5, 0-0 MASCAC) will open its 2011 Northeast slate on Thursday as it travels to Curry College for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
