Plymouth State Stops Fitchburg State

Panthers blank Flacons, 7-0 in game one; post 12-1 victory in game two

FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 14, 2011) – The Fitchburg State softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep to Plymouth State this afternoon, falling 7-0 and 12-1 in non-conference action at Coolidge Park.

Plymouth State scored seven runs on eight hits en route to a 7-0 win in the opener as Panther sophomore Jenn Bove (Medford, Mass./Medford) finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a homerun, two runs scored and one RBI. Freshman Jackie Digman (Burlington, Mass. Burlington) was also strong, hitting 2-for-4 with a run scored while freshman Sam Hebert (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

Freshman Shannon Fitzgerald (Blackstone, Mass./Blackstone Regional) sparked the Fitchburg State game one offense, hitting a perfect 2-for-2 with a stolen base, while sophomore Melissa Wadman (Dedham, Mass./Dedham), senior Lauren Donell (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) and freshman Megan Breault (Palmer, Mass, Palmer) notched one hit apiece.

Plymouth State grabbed the only run it would need early in the third inning as Bove connected for her first homerun of the season. In the fifth, the Panthers plated six more runs to seal the victory, capping their scoring on a Hebert, two run single.

Freshman Amber White (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro) picked up the win for Plymouth State, allowing just five hits (9 K's) in six innings of work, while senior Nicole Monroe (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex Regional) suffered the loss for the Falcons, yielding six earned runs over 4.1 innings of work.

In the night cap, Plymouth State exploded for 14 hits, scoring 12 runs en route to the doubleheader sweep. Herbert was strong again at the plate for the Panther, going 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored and one RBI, while junior Heather Blase (Milford, NH/Milford) chipped in with a 2-for-3 performance, including a triple, two runs scored and two RBI.

Sophomore Jill Moses (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) and classmate Kelly Bourgea (Malden, Mass./Malden) both finished 1-for-2 to lead Fitchburg State.

Plymouth State grabbed an early 1-0 lead again, this time in the top of the first inning, but Fitchburg State battled back, tying the 1-1 in the bottom of the frame as Moses scored on a passed ball. The Panthers retook the lead for good in the following inning (3-1) on Hebert's triple and later secured its 11th win of the season with a seven run scoring explosion in the fourth.

Freshman Nora Glavin (Windham, N.H./Windham) picked up the win for Plymouth State, allowing one unearned run on four hits (4 K's) in four innings of work, while junior Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) was charged with the loss for Fitchburg State.

Fitchburg State (10-15, 2-2 MASCAC) returns to action Saturday as it travels to Bridgewater State at 12 p.m. Plymouth State (11-10, 1-3 LEC) will host Eastern Connecticut on Saturday at 1 p.m.
