Fitchburg State Sweeps Regis

Falcons post 9-7 victory in game one; secure sweep with 8-3 triumph in game two

WESTON, Mass. (April 12, 2011) – The Fitchburg State softball team handed Regis College a doubleheader loss this afternoon, posting a 9-7 victory in game one and an 8-3 triumph in game two.

In the opener, Fitchburg State rallied from five runs down in the second inning, posting six runs over the next two innings to secure its ninth victory of the season.

Sophomore Jill Moses (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) continued her hot hitting for Fitchburg State, finishing 3-for-4 in the contest with two runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore Melissa Wadman (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) was also solid, hitting 1-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI, while sophomore Kelly Bourgea (Malden, Mass./Malden) added a pair of RBI on the afternoon.

With the score knotted at 2-2, Regis exploded for a four-hit, five run second inning to post a 7-2 advantage, but Fitchburg State responded immediately, totaling six runs over the next two frames to grab an 8-7 advantage. Senior Nicole Monroe (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) and freshman Megan Breault (Palmer, Mass./Palmer) sparked the Falcons with RBI singles in the third, while freshman Shannon Fitzgerald (Blackstone, Mass./Blackstone Regional) and senior Karen Skoczylas (Palmer, Mass./Palmer) combined for a pair of runs in the fourth.

In the circle, Monroe picked up the win on the mound for the Falcons, posting 5.1 innings of scoreless relief. Monroe kept the Pride at bay for the remainder of the contest with six strikeouts after taking over for freshman Jessica Drago (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton), who hurled the first 1.2 innings for the Falcons.

In the nightcap, Fitchburg State continued its offensive onslaught, totaling eight runs and 11 hits for its tenth victory of the season.

Wadman continued her strong performance at the plate, hitting 3-for-4 with a homerun, two runs scored and three RBI, while Skoczylas finished 2-for-4 with a double, triple, and one run scored. Moses was also solid, chipping in with a double, a pair of runs and two RBI.

Regis opened the contest again with an early 1-0 lead but Fitchburg State used a three run, third inning to take a lead it would not relinquish. Bourgea provided the big spark for the Falcons with a two-run single, while Wadman added a run scored after her leadoff base-hit.

In the fourth, Fitchburg State padded its lead with two more runs, this time using the long ball as Wadman connected for her first homerun of the season. Fitzgerald started the inning off for the Falcons with a base-hit up the middle before Wadman stepped in a belted a two-run blast.

The Falcons capped their scoring in the sixth, recording three runs to secure the victory. Freshman Nancy Henry (Forestdale, Mass./Sandwich) earned the victory in the circle for Fitchburg State, tossing the first six innings. The first-year slinger limited the Pride to only two runs scored on eight hits, while striking out a pair. Junior Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) worked a one run seventh to close the game.

Fitchburg State (10-13, 2-21 MASCAC) returns to action Thursday as it hosts Plymouth State University at 3 p.m. Regis (1-30, 0-18 TCCC) will host Elms College on Thursday at 5 p.m..
