Falcons downed 8-1 in game one; fall 4-1 in game two
CLERMONT, Fla. (March 15, 2012) – The Fitchburg State softball team suffered another pair of losses on their 2012 Florida trip, falling 8-1 to Heidelberg University in game one and 4-1 to Bethany (W.V.) in game two.
Heidelberg 8, Fitchburg State 1 (Game 1)
In game one, Heidelberg registered six first inning runs and never slowed down, cruising to an 8-1 game victory.
Freshman Ashley Forgues (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) led Fitchburg State offensively, connecting for one of the Falcons four hits, while Victoria Brinkley (Durham, Conn./Guilford) added the lone Fitchburg State RBI.
In the circle, freshman Brittany Whiting (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) suffered the loss, tossing a complete game for Fitchburg State. Whiting finished with six hits and eight runs allowed (one earned), while only walking a pair. Christine Foster (Lucky, Ohio/Eastwood) earned the win for Heidelberg, yielding just one run and five hits over 7.0 IP.
Bethany 4, Fitchburg State 1 (Game 2)
In the second game, Bethany (W.V.) broke open a close 2-1 affair in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring two times to clinch the game two victory, 4-1.
Fitchburg State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but a pair of single run innings gave Bethany its first lead of the contest in the second inning. Senior Alycia McGrail (N. Brookfield, Mass./N. Brookfield) led the Falcons offensive attack, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored.
On the rubber, senior Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) worked six innings for Fitchburg State, allowing just four runs on seven hits, while striking out three and walking none.
Fitchburg State (1-7, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it hosts WPI at 3 p.m.
