Fitchburg State Falls To Gettysburg, 10-2

Binnall and Flaherty pace Falcons in non-conference setback

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 13, 2014) – The Fitchburg State softball team dropped a 10-2 decision to Gettysburg College on day five of its 2014 South Carolina trip at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex this morning.

Gettysburg College erupted for ten runs on 12 hits as Fitchburg State fell to the Bullets of Gettysburg College, 10-2 in non-conference softball action at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex in Myrtle Beach.

Fitchburg State was led offensively by junior Marissa Binnall (Fitchburg, Mass.), who finished with one hit and one RBI, while junior Colleen Flaherty (Stoughton, Mass.) and classmate Katelyn Fitzgerald (Fitchburg, Mass.) combined for a pair of base hits, including a double.

Junior Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J.) paced the Bullets offensive charge, hitting 2-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBI, while classmate Emily Hall (Reston, Va.) and sophomore Meghan Hisgen (E. Northport, N.Y.) were also solid, collecting a pair of hits each.

On the mound, junior Brittany Whiting (Sharon, Mass.) suffered the setback for the Falcons, yielding seven runs on 11 hits in three and a third innings of work, while sophomore Michelle Fox (Newton, N.J.) improved to 4-0 on the season for Gettysburg, giving up two runs on just three hits in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (3-4, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday as it hosts the Engineers of WPI for a double header starting at 3 p.m.
