Medaille Blanks Fitchburg State, 7-0

Gemma and Brown pace Falcons with two hits apiece in non-conference setback

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 12, 2014) – The Fitchburg State softball team was in action this morning, falling to the Mavericks of Medaille College, 7-0 on day four of their South Carolina spring trip at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex.

At the plate, sophomore Marissa Gemma (Leominster, Mass.) paced the Falcons offensively, going 2-for-4 with two singles and one stolen base, while freshman Jessalynne Brown (Malden, Mass.) added a pair of base knocks.

Medaille College was led by sophomores Kiera Diana (Lackawanna, N.Y.) and Amanda Mesi (Lackawanna, N.Y.) who combined for six hits and one RBI, while freshman Morgan Ziemba (Lancaster, Penn.) hit 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.

On the mound, senior Kerry Alcott (Groton, Mass.) took the loss for Fitchburg State, yielding five runs on five hits with three strikeouts over two innings of work, while junior Nicole Gulisano (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) earned the win for the Mavericks, allowing nine in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (3-3, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action tomorrow as it battles Gettysburg College at 9:30 a.m.
