Fitchburg State Earns Spilt On Day Three

Falcons edge Pitt-Greensburg, 3-1; suffer 10-4 setback to Keystone College

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 11, 2014) – The Fitchburg State softball team posted a 1-1 spilt on day three of its Myrtle Beach, S.C. trip, defeating the University of Pitt-Greensburg, 3-1 in game one before falling to Keystone College, 10-4 in game two.

Fitchburg State 3, Pitt-Greensburg 1 (Game 1)

In the first contest of the day, Fitchburg State edged Pitt-Greensburg, 3-1 in eight innings as the Falcons plated a pair of runs on two passed balls in the top of the eighth inning to secure their third win of the season.

Senior Ashley Forgues (Fitchburg, Mass.) and sophomore Marissa Gemma (Leominster, Mass.) paced Fitchburg State's offense, combining for two singles and pair of runs scored, while newcomer Kelsea LeBlanc (Attleboro, Mass.) added to the mix with a base hit and two stolen bases. The Bobcats were led by junior Amanda Shepard (Pittsburgh, Penn.) who hit 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, while freshman Jessica Weiss (Venetia, Penn.) added one hit and a run scored.

In the circle, senior Kerry Alcott (Groton, Mass.) allowing one hit and struck out four in three innings of relief en-route to her first victory of the season for the Falcons, while freshman Claire Welka (Gibsonia, Penn.) took the loss for Pitt-Greensburg, giving up two runs on two walks (2 K's) in two innings of work.

Keystone 10, Fitchburg State 4 (Game 2)

In game two, Keystone College erupted for ten runs on 11 hits as the Giants defeated Fitchburg State by the score of 10-4.

The Falcon offense was led by junior Marissa Binnall (Fitchburg, Mass.), posting a pair of singles with one run scored, while freshman Jessalynne Brown (Malden, Mass.) aided the offense, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Keystone College was paced by sophomore Katie Marro (Canadensis, Penn.) (4-for-5) with three runs scored and a double, while junior Sara Schraden (Allentown, Penn.) hit 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of runs scored.

On the mound, freshman Terri Ferrazzani (N. Reading, Mass.) suffered the setback for Fitchburg State, allowing nine runs (6 earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts, while counterpart Karissa Worobey (Scranton, Penn.) picked up the win for the Giants, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks.

Fitchburg State (3-2, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action tomorrow as it takes on SUNY Canton at 9:30 a.m. and Medaille College at 11:30 a.m.
