Fitchburg State Drops Season-Opener To Penn State-Berks, 4-3

Alcott registers career best 11 K's in Falcons 2014 opener

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 9, 2014) – The Fitchburg State softball team opened its 2014 season this morning, dropping a 4-3 decision to Penn State-Berks at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex.

Penn State-Berks collected four runs on six hits en-route to the 4-3 victory as both teams opened their 2014 slates this morning at the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Freshman Chelsea Bright (Cape May Court House, N.J.) led the Nittany Lions, going 2-for-3, including the game-winning walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the seventh, while sophomore Jenna Heffner (Bethlehem, Penn.) notched a double and two RBI.

The Falcons were paced offensively by junior Amanda Whitelaw (Flemington, N.J.) who finished 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI while senior Kerry Alcott (Groton, Mass.) went 1-for-3 at the dish with a double and one RBI. Senior Ashley Forgues (Fitchburg, Mass.) drove in the other run for Fitchburg State with a run scoring double.

Alcott suffered the loss for the Falcons, yielding four runs with six hits allowed and a career-best 11 strikeouts over six and one third innings pitched, while junior Casey Hafer (Kennett Square, Penn.) earned the win for Penn State-Berks, allowing three runs, seven hits and six K's in the complete effort.

Fitchburg State (0-1, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action tomorrow as it battles Bay Path College at 9:30 a.m. and Rivier University at 1:30 p.m.
