Fitchburg State Splits MASCAC Doubleheader With MCLA

Falcons suffer tough 1-0 setback in game one; Rebound with 3-0 shutout in game two

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University softball team earned a split with the Trailblazers of MCLA in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) double headers at the Zavattaro Athletic Complex this afternoon.

MCLA 1, Fitchburg State 0 (8 Inn) (Game 1)

In the opening contest, Fitchburg State received a stellar outing from freshman pitcher Kaylee Sylvestre, allowing one unearned run on seven hits with nine K's, while senior Rachel Quackenbush was just as impressive, giving up just four hits and striking out nine for the Traillazers.

With the score 0-0 going into the eighth, Fitchburg State nearly opened the scoring as senior Marissa Gemma reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a single by Sylvestre before junior Jessalynne Brown walked to load the bases, but MCLA got out of the jam with a strikeout to preserve the 0-0 stalemate.

The Trailblazers secured the win in the bottom half of the eighth when senior Michaela DiNicola singled, moved to second on a fielding miscue and scored throwing miscue, following a sacrifice bunt attempt, resulting in the 1-0 final.

Fitchburg State was paced by Gemma, who hit 2-for-4, including a double, while Sylvestre and freshman Maddie Medina collected one hit each for the Falcons. The Trailblazers were led by DiNicola, who finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and a double, while newcomer Katie Berghela notched one hit with a double.

Fitchburg State 3, MCLA 0 (Game 2)

In game two, Fitchburg State was led by sophomore Emily Comtois went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Gemma finished 2-for-4 at the dish with double, one run scored and an RBI. For MCLA, Quackenbush hit 1-for-2, including a double, while Berghela and DiNicola added one hit each.

The Falcons took the lead in the top of the third when Gemma singled, moved to second on a base hit of the bat of Sylvestre, while Comtois doubled to drive in both Gemma and Sylvestre for the 2-0 margin.

The Green and Gold upped its advantage in the top of the fourth as senior Brianna Uga singled, advanced to second on ground out and crossed the plate on an RBI double to left from Gemma for to make the score 3-0.

In circle, junior Galen Kerr pitched a complete game four hit shutout for the Falcons with five strikeouts, while junior Katelyn Henault took the loss for MCLA, giving up three runs on eight hits in four innings of work.

Fitchburg State (14-10, 4-2 MASCAC) will be back in action on Monday as hosts the Bears of Bridgewater State for a double header, starting at 12 p.m. MCLA (9-13, 3-3 MASCAC) will travel to Mass. Maritime Academy on Monday for a twin-billing for a 1 pm start.
