Falcons Manage Spilt On Day Four

Falcons drop game one to NYU, 5-0; Defeat FDU-Florham, 7-4 in nightcap

CLERMONT, FLA. - The Fitchburg State softball team split a pair of game on day four of its 2017 Florida Spring Trip as the Falcons suffered a tough 5-0 setback New York University in the opener before defeating the Devils of FDU-Florham, 7-4 in the night cap to salvage a split this morning.

New York University 5, Fitchburg State 0 (Game 1)

New York University scored five runs on nine hits, en-route to a 5-0 victory at Hancock Park this morning.

Junior Emily Comtois paced the Falcons offense, going a perfect 2-for-2 at the dish, while sophomore Damari Grossi added the other hit for the Green and Gold. For New York University, sophomore Ashley Mains finished 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while freshman Caroline Saccacio hit 2-for-4, including a home run, two runs scored and a pair of RBI.

The Violets took the lead in the top of the first as sophomore Diana King walked to lead off the contest, moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout before Mains singled to left center to plate King for the 1-0 edge.

New York University upped it advantage in the third frame when King reached on a fielding miscue and later scored on a base knock off the bat of Saccacio, while Mains doubled home Saccacio to make the score 3-0.

The Violets added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as sophomore Claire Stefanelli reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to third on a throwing miscue before senior Molly Webber drove in Stefanelli with a single to left center, resulting in the 5-0 final. 

In the circle, senior Galen Kerr took the loss for the Falcons, allowing five runs (4 Earned) on nine hits with six strikeouts in the complete game effort, while sophomore Katherine Piorkowski earned the win for the Violets, tossing a complete game, three hitter with three K's.

Fitchburg State 7, FDU-Florham 4 (Game 2)

Fitchburg State posted seven runs on eight hits, en-route to securing a 7-4 victory over the Devils of FDU-Florham to salvage a spilt on the day.

Fitchburg State sophomore hurler Kaylee Sylvestre picked up the win, yielding four runs (3 Earned) on nine hits with five K's in the complete game effort, while junior Audrie Thomas suffered the setback, giving up six runs (3 Earned) on seven hits (three strikeouts) in 5.2 innings of work for the Devils.

The Falcons opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Grossi was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and crossed the plate when senior Tori Cyrus launched her first home run of the season over the right center field fence for the 2-0 lead. 

FDU-Florham responded with three runs in the top of the fourth when freshman Annamarie Santangelo, classmate Gabby Young and senior Paige Lillie all singled to load the bases before Santagelo scored on a throwing miscue, while junior Michelle Mangini connected on a two-run single to center for the 3-2 advantage.

The Green and Gold regained the lead in the bottom half of the fifth (4-3) as Comtois singled and moved to third on a fielding miscue before sophomore Hayley McCarthy doubled to center field to bring home pinch runner Melissa DiPhilippo and senior Jessalynne Brown. 

Fitchburg State upped its margin in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases on a fielder's choice and a pair of walks by Sylvestre, Cyrus and Comtois, while Brown dropped a two run single into right field that plated Sylvestre and Cyrus, resulting in the 7-4 final.

The Falcons offense was led by Brown, who went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI, while Cyrus hit 1-for-3 with a home run, two runs batted in and one run scored. For the Devils, Santangelo finished 2-for-4 at the dish with a double, one run scored and one RBI, while Young went 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored.

Fitchburg State (3-5, 0-0 MASCAC) concludes its 2017 Florida Spring Trip tomorrow as it battles Southwestern University and Susquehanna University for a double header, starting at 10 a.m. at Hancock Park.
