Fitchburg State Falls Twice To Framingham State

Falcons drop game one 6-2; Suffer tough 3-0 setback in nighcap

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University softball team opened Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon, dropping a pair of games Framingham State at the Maple Street Field. The Green and Gold fell 6-2 in the opener before suffering a tough 3-0 setback in game two.

The games were originally scheduled to be played in Fitchburg but were moved to Framingham due to unplayable field conditions in Fitchburg from the recent storm.  

The Rams improve to 12-6 overall and are now 2-0 in the league, while the Falcons are now 3-9 overall and 0-2 in the league.

Framingham State 6, Fitchburg State 2 (Gm 1)

Framingham State scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to secure the victory in the opener.  Junior Dayna Marchant tripled to left center with one out before classmate Megan Downing drove her in with a well-placed squeeze bunt to give the Rams their first lead of the game. 

Sophomore Kayla Finacchiaro then drove in two runs with a single to center, while freshman Kyla Johnson plated a run on a base hit up the middle, resulting in the 6-2 final. 

Fitchburg State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as sophomore Damari Grossi reached on an infield single, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball before crossing the plate on an error for the game's first run.

The Rams knotted the score (1-1) in the top of the second when junior Anna Dziok laced a solo homerun to left. The Falcons grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the third on an RBI ground from Emily Comtois that drove in Grossi who had reached on an infield single.

Dziok tied the game again for Framingham State in the top of the fourth when she reached on a single to left and scored on an ensuing fielding miscue (2-2).

In the circle senior Galen Kerr took the loss for the Falcons going six innings and allowing six runs, five earned on six hits with four strikeouts, while sophomore Kelsi Gunarathne recorded her eighth win of the year for the Rams, going seven innings and allowing two runs, one earned on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Framingham State 3, Fitchburg State 0 (Gm 2)

In game two the Rams plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning and one in the second to complete the sweep.  Finacchiaro came up with a two run single in the first, while Kylie Boyle and Lauren hit back-to-back doubles in the second to score the third and final run of the contest, resulting in the 3-0 game two final.

On the hill, sophomore Kaylee Sylvestre suffer the setback, yielding three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in seven innings of work for the Green and Gold, while junior Jessica Pietersen collected the win for the Rams in game two going seven innings and allowing no runs on just two hits with four strikeouts. 

Fitchburg State returns to action on Tuesday as it hosts the Hawks of Becker College for twin billing, starting at 3 p.m. Framingham State will travel to Brandeis University on Tuesday for a double header slated to start at 4 p.m.
