Softball Earns Split with Plymouth State University

Fitchburg, Mass. – Senior Galen Kerr picked up her third win of the season with seven strong innings of work in game two, to propel the Fitchburg State University softball team to a 2-1 win over visiting Plymouth State University to earn a split with the Panthers in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Coolidge Park. In game one Plymouth State hurler Caitlyn Miller earned her seventh win of the season leading the visitors to a 7-2 victory.  

Facing a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the third in the nightcap, the Green and Gold posted a pair of runs in the home half of the frame to escape with a 2-1 victory over the Panthers. Freshman McKenzie Lambert opened up the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a perfectly placed bunt single from Samantha Woodman.

Sophomore Damari Grossi followed with an infield single to plate Lambert for the tying run, advancing Woodman to third. With one out the Falcons would manufacture the lead run with a delayed steal play scoring Woodman (2-1).

Plymouth State scored their only run in the top of the third inning with an RBI ground-out sophomore Mel Goss to put the Panthers up 1-0.

Kerr's final line include 7.0 innings pitched, allowing just seven hits, one earned run and struck out seven for the victory. The Panthers used two pitchers, as Kayla Mathieu took the circle to start the game. The sophomore allowed two earned runs on three hits, with two walks and four strikeouts in the loss. Junior Katie Gildea was the only other Falcon to reach base via a hit in game two.

Fitchburg Satate had three student-athletes record at least two hits, including Grossi, Tori Cyrus and Emily Comtois in the setback. Sophomore Nichole Sylvester and Comtois has RBI's in the game one setback. Freshman Nora Butler led the Panthers with two hits, two RBI and a run scored.

Pitcher Kaylee Sylvestre suffered the setback in game one for the Falcons, her fifth of the season to go along with two wins. The sophomore went 5.0 innings allowing five earned runs on ten hits, with three strikeouts and two walks.

Plymouth State University notched single runs in the second and fourth inning before pushing across five runs in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 7-0.

FSU picked up its first run of the game when freshman Emma Campbell scored on a sacrifice fly from Sylvester in the bottom of the sixth. The Falcons doubled their total in the bottom of the seventh when Comtois singled to left field scoring Cyrus who had doubled with one out for the 7-2 final.

Up next, Fitchburg State University (7-11, 2-2 MASCAC) will host MCLA on Friday for a MASCAC doubleheader with the Trailblazers. First pitch is set for 2pm. Plymouth State (12-12, 1-3 LEC) will travel to Eastern Connecticut on Saturday for a Little East Conference doubleheader starting at 1pm.
