Fitchburg State Falls At Nichols, 9-5

Grossi goes 2-for-3 for Falcons in non-conference setback

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University softball team was in action this afternoon, dropping a 9-5 decision to the Bison of Nichols College in non-conference action at the Nichols Softball Field with the second scheduled contest called due to expected rain.

Fitchburg State grabbed the lead in the top of the third as freshman McKenzie Lambert walked, moved to second on a walk by sophomore Damari Grossi and scored along with Grossi following a single and two fielding miscues before senior Katie Gildea blasted a two-run homer to right center that plated classmate Jessalynne Brown for the 4-0 advantage.

With the score 4-2, Nichols took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when junior Kendall Meehan singled and scored off base hit by sophomore Jessica Kuelling, while Kuelling eventually scored on a wild pitch four batters later to make the score 6-4.

The Falcons cut the deficit to one (6-5) in the top of the sixth as sophomore Michelle LeBlanc reached second on a two-base fielding miscue and came around to score after a single to left center from Grossi.

The Bison secured the win, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth when Meehan doubled to score senior Christina Drake, while Meehan crossed the plate following a throwing miscue, resulting in the 9-5 final.

Fitchburg State was led by Grossi, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI, while Gildea finished 1-for-2 with home run, one run scored and a pair of RBI. For Nichols, Drake hit 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Meehan added three hits, including two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI.

In the circle, senior Galen Kerr took the loss for the Falcons, allowing nine runs on 12 hits with seven strikeouts in six innings of work, while freshman Alexis Ferris collected the win for the Bison, giving up five runs on five hits with 11 K's in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (11-12, 6-2  MASCAC) returns to action tomorrow as it travels to Lyndon State to take on the Yellow Jackets for a double header starting at 3:30 PM. Nichols (12-13, 4-8 CCC) will host the Golden Bears of Western New England University for twin billing, starting at 3:00 PM.
