Falcons Drop A Pair Of Games On Day One

Clipped 6-5 in opener; Fall 9-0 in night cap

Clermont, Fla. – The Fitchburg State University softball team dropped a pair of game on the first day of its annual spring trip to Florida as the Falcons suffered a tough 6-5 setback to Roger Williams in the first game before dropping a 9-0 decision to Endicott College in the night cap.

How It Happened

In the first game of the day, Fitchburg State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when freshman Cammi Sperling (Rutland, Mass.) connected on first collegiate homerun with a blast to left before Roger Williams answered back (4-1) with two runs in the third and fourth innings each as freshman Olivia Mora (Windham, Maine) notched a two run single, while sophomore Alyssa Murray (Green Brook, N.J.) added an RBI single.

The Falcons responded in the top of the sixth, plating four runs to take a 5-4 lead as sophomore McKenzie Lambert (Wilbraham, Mass.) launched her first collegiate home run to centerfield before junior Michaela Keenan (Boston, Mass.) drove home sophomore Keeliey Zompetti (Hudson, Mass.) with fielder's choice, while Sperling added a two-run double later in the frame.

The Hawks battle back however in the bottom half of the seventh when sophomore Taylor Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.) drew a two-out walk and came around to score one batter later as newcomer Katrine Goria (Wyckoff, N.J.) connected on a walk-off homerun, resulting in the 6-5 final.

In game two, Endicott took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third as junior Jamie Hopgood (Warwick, R.I.) and freshman Adrianna Favreau (Tewksbury, Mass.) connected on RBI singles before the Gulls extended their margin in the following frame (6-0) when Hopgood notched a two-run base knock through the right side.

Endicott would tack on three more runs in the top of the fifth with sophomore Hannah Llewdllyn (Danvers, Mass.) and senior Kayla Sheldon (Burlington, Mass.) adding run scoring hits, resulting in the 9-0 final.

Inside the Numbers

Fitchburg State was led by Sperling in game one, who finished 2-for-3 with a double, home run, one run scored and three RBI, while Lambert went 1-for-4 with home run, one run scored and one RBI.

In the circle, sophomore Emma Campbell (Goffstown, N.H.) took the loss for the Green and Gold in the opener, allowing six runs (5 earned) on eight hits and two K's in 6.2 innings of work.

In the night cap, Lambert and junior Melissa DiPhilippo (Norfolk, Mass.) collected one walk each for Fitchburg State, while Sperling added one walk and a stolen base.

On the bump, sophomore Mikayla Harnois (Attleboro, Mass.) took the loss for the Green and Gold, allowing six earned runs on 11 hits with one strikeout.

14th meeting between the two schools in softball with the Falcons 3-11 all-time when taking on the Hawks.

Roger Williams has won the last eight contests against Fitchburg State, including a 3-0 decision in the last meeting on March 12, 2015.

12th between the two schools in the circle with the Falcons 5-7 all-time when taking on the Gulls.

Endicott has won six of the last seven matchups with Fitchburg State, including a 1-0 victory in the last meeting on March 14, 2017.
