Falcons Earn Split On Day Two

Fall 9-1 to Albright in opener; Rebound with 4-1 win over Lasell in nightcap

Clermont, Fla. – The Fitchburg State University softball team registered a split on day two of its annual spring trip to Florida in a day/night double header today as the Falcons dropped a 9-1 decision to the Lions of Albright College in the first game before defeating the Lasers of Lasell College, 4-1 in the night cap.

How It Happened

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the first, Fitchburg State cut into the deficit (3-1) as junior Maddie Medina (Pelham, N.H.) doubled down the left field line, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Melissa DiPhilippo (Norfolk, Mass.) and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore McKenzie Lambert (Wilbraham, Mass.).

Albright upped its lead (5-1) in the top of the second when junior Stephany Courtney (Camden, Del.) singled home classmate Kelly Cembrale (Bethpage, N.Y.) before junior Stephanie Pomante (Pequannock, N.J.) plated sophomore Brooke Yerger (Boyertown, Penn.) en-route to a 9-1 victory.

In the second game of the day, Fitchburg State broke a 0-0 stalemate in the top of the third as DiPhilippo doubled to left field to score sophomore Emma Campbell (Goffstown, N.H) before Lambert and newcomer Cammi Sperling (Rutland, Mass.) added run scoring singles to make the score 4-0.

Lasell threatened in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run on two hits after loading the bases on a hit batter and back-to-back singles from freshman Sarah Walton (Poland, Maine) and senior Ashley Gatchell (Franklin, Mass.) before sophomore Victoria Spellman (Rocky Hill, Conn.) walked to bring in newcomer Alexis Truesdale (Wakefield, Mass.), resulting in the 4-1 final.

Inside the Numbers

In game one of the day, Fitchburg State was paced by Lambert, who went 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Medina finished 1-for-3 with a double and one run scored.

In the circle, sophomore Mikayla Harnois (Attleboro, Mass.) pitched six innings of relief, allowing six runs (2 earned) on eight hits with one strikeout.

In the night cap, Lambert led the way for the Green and Gold, hitting 3-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI, while Sperling added two hits and an RBI.

Campbell picked up the win for Fitchburg State in game two, after yielding one run on five hits with four strikeouts in the complete game effort.

First ever meeting between the two schools on the softball field.

Eighth between the two schools in the circle with the Falcons 4-4-0 all-time when taking on the Lasers.

Fitchburg State has won the last three contests with Lasell College, including a 6-4 decision last season (3/13/17).
