Falcons Sail Past Buccaneers

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University softball team handed Massachusetts Maritime Academy a pair of defeats in both teams Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) openers on Friday afternoon.

How It Happened

Game 1

The Falcons plated four runs in the first inning for the quick lead. Nicole Sylvester (Everett, Mass.) singled to center field to bring in Maddie Medina (Pelham, NH), who had opened the frame with a single up the middle. With two outs the Green and Gold plated three move runs. Michaela Keenan (Boston, Mass.) drove in Sylvester and Taylor Colvin (Lancaster, Mass.) delivered a 2-RBI double to deep left field.

FSU sent 14 players to the plate in a 10 run third inning. Michelle LeBlanc (Ashburnham, Mass.) and Keenan both had a pair of hits in the inning. LeBlanc set the tables with a double and added an RBI triple later in the inning. Keenan's first hit drove in Sylvester, who had reached on an error and her second plated LeBlanc after her three-bagger. McKenzie Lambert (Wilbraham, Mass.) had a pair of RBI's in the inning with a double to right field.

Jill Corazzini had the lone hit for the Buccaneers.

Game 2

The hosts opened the nightcap with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first frame. For the second straight game Medina opened with a single. Two batters later Medina scored on a Sylvester ground out to second base. LeBlanc doubled the lead with a RBI single, scoring teammate Cammi Sperling (Rutland, Mass.)  and the 2-0 lead.

With the Falcons up 4-0 the Buccaneers made it a one-run game with three runs in the top of the sixth frame. Corazzini delivered an RBI double to centerfield scoring Lucia Buzzell. Up next, Madison Ovadek singled to score Corazzini then Carli Thomas closed the gap to one with an RBI double to right field.

The Falcons answered in the bottom of the inning, notching three unearned runs to push the score back to a four run advantage at 7-3. A 1-2-3 seventh inning from the Falcons defense sealed the victory.

By The Numbers

Colvin notched her third win of the season in game one for her first MASCAC win, allowing just one hit, with seven strikeouts over five innings. Pitcher Melissa Cochrane took the loss for MMA.

Emma Campbell (Goffstown, NH) took the win in game two to move her record to 2-3. She scattered five hits, three earned runs and seven strikeouts over seven innings. Jenna Nalette suffered the loss for MMA allowing three earned runs and seven hits.

In the two games for the Falcons, Medina went 5-for-7 with 3 RBI, while LeBlanc was 4-for-7 with 2 RBI's.

Ovadek led the visitors going 2-for-3 and an RBI on the day. 

Up Next

The Falcons will host the Hawks of Becker College on Tuesday afternoon for a twinbill starting at 3:00 PM, while Mass. Maritime heads to Wentworth for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon starting at 10:00 am.
