Falcons Drop Pair Of Non-Conference Games To Judges

Waltham, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University softball team dropped a pair of games to the Judges of Brandeis University, 7-0/11-3 in non-conference action this afternoon at Marcus Field.

How It Happened

Game One

Brandeis opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as freshman Julie Fujita (Honolulu, Hawaii) singled to right to bring in a run before junior Melissa DeLaurentis (Greenwich, N.Y.) launched a three run home run to left in the third to extend the Judges lead to 6-0.

The hosts capped the scoring in the bottom half of the sixth when Fujita doubled to center to plate junior Keri Lehtonen (Owens, Conn.), resulting in the 7-0, game one final.

Game Two

Brandeis grabbed an early 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the first as Fujita connected on a three run homer to center field and upped its margin (5-0 in the third frame on a two run shot from sophomore PJ Ross (Kingston, H.H.).

Fitchburg State cut the deficit to 6-3 when junior Michaela Keenan (Boston, Mass.) singled in classmate Melissa DiPhilippo (Norfolk, Mass.) in the fourth a run scoring base hit off the bat of junior Nicole Sylvester (Everett, Mass.) in the sixth.

The Judges responded with five runs in the bottom sixth, highlighted by a grand slam by DeLaurentis, resulting in the 11-3, game two final to earn the sweep.

Inside the Numbers

Fitchburg State was paced by Sylvester, who hit 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI, while Keenan, sophomore McKenzie Lambert (Wilbraham, Mass.), DiPhilippo, junior Samantha Woodman (Essex, Mass.) and classmate Michelle LeBlanc (Ashburnham, Mass.) added one hit each.

For Brandeis, DeLaurentis hit 4-for-7 with homeruns, two runs scored and seven RBI, while Fujita finished 3-of-6, including a double, homerun, three runs scored and three RBI.

15th meeting between the two schools on the softball field with the Falcons currently 9-6-0 all-time when taking on the Judges.

Fitchburg State had won six of the last eight contests against Brandeis with the Judges registering a 9-0/4-0 sweep in the last meeting on April, 28th 2008. Former Falcon Meghan Callahan led the way for the Green and Gold, going 3-for-5 on the afternoon.
