Fitchburg State Hustles Past Emerson, 58-46

Proffitt and Moses post double-double efforts in Falcons sixth victory of the season

FITCHBURG, Mass. (December 11, 2010) –  Senior Melissa Proffitt (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) posted a double-double in Fitchburg State’s sixth victory of the season as the Falcons downed Emerson College, 58-46 in non-conference action this afternoon.

Proffitt tallied a team-high 14 points in the victory, shooting 5-of-16 from the field and 4-of-9 from the charity stripe. The senior forward also brought in a team-best 12 boards to go with two steals, two assists and one block. Sophomore Jill Moses (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) was also solid with a double-double of her own (13 points, 11 rebounds), while senior Kim Duprey (Bernardston, Mass./Pioneer Valley) added 12 points off the bench.

Clinging to only a slim one point lead after one half of play (28-27), Fitchburg State erupted for an 11-4 run in the opening minutes of the second period to extend its margin to eight. Proffitt sparked the Falcons with a jumper and a trio of free-throws, while freshman Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) and senior Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) added a pair of lay-ups.

Fitchburg State grabbed a 16 point lead (53-37) by the 7:03 mark, using three consecutive baskets in the paint by Proffitt and Moses. The Falcons maintained their double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest, shooting 38.7% from the field throughout the second half.

Emerson freshman Elissa Chojnikci (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) led all scorers with a game-high 21 points as she hit 7-of-17 from the field, including 4-of-9 from downtown. Sophomore Olivia DiNucci (Pittsburg, Pa./Shaver Area) added 12 points and five boards to the Lions attack, while freshman Olivia Connors (Windham, N.H./Salem) and senior Kathy Andrade (Hull, Mass./Hull) chipped in with four points apiece.       

Fitchburg State (6-3, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action on December 28th as it battles Bethel University in Daytona Beach, Fla. at 1:30 p.m. Emerson (2-8, 0-0 GNAC) will be in action after the break as it travels to Bowdoin College on January 6th at 7 p.m.
