Fitchburg State Blazes MCLA, 81-54

Fahey leads the way with a game-high 27 points in Falcons MASCAC victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 14, 2012) – Sophomore Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) record a game-high 27 points to lead the Fitchburg State women's basketball team to an 81-54 MASCAC victory over MCLA this evening.

Fahey was strong all night for the Falcons, shooting 10-of-18 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line, while adding seven caroms, three assists and two steals. Senior Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) added a double-double performance with ten points and game-best 19 rebounds, while junior Kelsey Johnston (Shirley, Mass./Saint Bernards) broke loose for nine points and nine boards on the night.

Senior Alie Dobrovolc (Little Falls, N.Y./Little Falls) and sophomore Kaitlyn Chenevert (Uxbridge, Mass./Uxbridge) led the MCLA offensive attack, totaling eight points apiece, while freshman Sarah Hamilton (Dalton, Mass./Wahconah) chipped in with seven points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field.

Fitchburg State opened the contest full of steam, posting a 12-2 run in the opening 2:30 to grab a commanding ten point advantage. Johnston sparked the Falcons' outburst with back-to-back threes while Fahey added a pair of bucks and sophomore Laura Cote (Ashby, Mass./Saint Bernards) chipped in a lay-up.

MCLA began to march back, rifling off six consecutive points but then the Fitchburg State offense began to take over after the Trailblazers star player, Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) left the game due to injury. Following the injury, the Falcons went on a tear, opening a 15 point lead (31-16) with 4:24 remaining in the half. Fahey ignited the surge with six points, while sophomore Jackie Boffoli (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) cashed in from long range.

Fitchburg State held a 17 point margin at the break (36-19) and continued its offensive momentum in the second stanza. The Falcons went up by as much as 27 in the frame, using a 15 point, second half effort from Fahey. Fitchburg State collected an 8-0 run early on, posting a 24 point advantage midway through the period, before closing the contest with a 6-0 rally at the 2:47 mark.

For the contest, Fitchburg State dominated the boards, taking a 56-43 advantage on the glass, while also shooting 41.1% from the field and 5-of-13 from three point range. MCLA was hampered by its 29.2% shooting, hitting just 21-of-72 from the field and 7-of-28 from downtown.

Fitchburg State (16-7, 4-7 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Westfield State at 1 p.m. MCLA (13-11, 6-5 MASCAC) will visit Bridgewater State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
