Falcons collect runner up honors in Key Largo Classic
TAVERNIER, Fla. (December 31, 2012) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team fell just short in the championship round of the 2012 Key Largo Classic, suffering a 76-39 setback to UMass Boston this evening.
Jumping out to a 20-6 lead in the first half, UMass Boston cruised from there to collect the 2012 Key Largo Classic tournament crown. Freshman forward Olivia Murphy was named tournament MVP after recording a double-double in both games in the event.
Also making all-tournament for UMass Boston was Lauren Perra, who had 13 assists and ten points in the championship, and Andrea Suffredini, who had a game-high 23 points with five three-pointers. Murphy notched 21 points and ten rebounds.
Junior Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) earned all-tournament honors for Fitchburg State, leading the Falcons with seven points in the championship. Freshman Taylah Pelote (E. Taunton, Mass./Taunton) was also bright for Fitchburg State, posting six points and 12 boards, while junior Laura Cote (Ashby, Mass./Saint Bernards) also added six points on the evening.
Fitchburg State (5-5, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Thursday as it hosts Anna Maria College at 5:30 p.m. UMass Boston (9-2, 1-1 LEC) will visit Rhode Island College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
