Fitchburg State Bounces Back Over Western NE, 67-59

Four Falcons net double-digits in 11th victory of the season

FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 6, 2014) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team added another victory to the win column this evening after downing the Golden Bears of Western New England University, 67-59 in non-conference action.

The victory stops a three game skid for the Falcons who improve to 11-9 on the season. Western New England drops to 8-12 overall.

For the game, four Falcons collected double-figures with junior Megan Wodzinski (Littleton, Mass.) leading the way with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Sophomore Tori Cyrus (Everett, Mass.) and senior Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass.) were also solid with 12 points apiece, while junior Laura Cote (Ashby, Mass.) chipped in with ten.

Four Golden Bears also notched double-digits as the trio of Chelsea Vujs (Berlin, Conn.), Samantha Battaini (Leominster, Mass.) and Sammie Olson (Tolland, Conn.) connected for 12 points and Katie Eckert (Lee, Mass.) added ten.

Clinging to a four point lead at the break (32-28), Fitchburg State opened the second half with a 10-4 run to extend its lead to ten (42-32). The Falcons continued to pressure, leading by as much as 20 points throughout the half with 20 points in the paint and 13 points off turnovers. Cyrus led the Falcon second half surge with ten points and three steals, while Cote and Wodzinksi collected seven points apiece.

For the game, Fitchburg State shot well, hitting on 45.6% of its attempts, including 5-of-12 from downtown. The Falcons also hit 10-of-14 from the charity stripe, finishing 10-of-14 for the contest.

Western New England struggled from the floor, finishing 23-of-64 on the night (35.9%) and just 2-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Falcons held a slim margin on the glass with a 41-38 advantage, while also using 13 steals to cause 20 Golden Bear turnovers.

Fitchburg State will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts MCLA at 1 p.m.
