Worcester State Shuts Down Fitchburg State, 56-47

Fahey set all-time scoring mark with 12 points in Falcons setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. (January 25, 2014) – Senior Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass.) etched her name in the Fitchburg State records books this afternoon, becoming the program's all-time leading scoring with 12 points in a 56-47 setback to MASCAC rival Worcester State University.

Fahey finished 5-of-9 from the field as she surpassed the previous mark of 1,476 points set by Lynn Dorrow over her four-year career from 1987-1991. Joining Fahey on the offensive end was junior Megan Wodzinski (Littleton, Mass.) who added 10 points and four steals, while junior Laura Cote (Ashby, Mass.) chipped in with nine.

Worcester State received a solid showing from senior Meghan Burns (W. Brookfield, Mass.), who posted a game-high 21 points with 9-of-18 shooting from the floor. Guard Julie Frankian (Millbury, Mass.) was also strong with 12 points and six rebounds, while sophomore Cheyenne Jennings (Worcester, Mass.)  finished with a near triple double of 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals.

The Lancers grabbed a four point margin at the end of the first half (32-28), using a 14-4 run over the final seven minutes of the period. Burns led the Worcester State first half efforts, posting 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor, while Jennings paced the Lancers offense with four points and four assists. Fahey led the Falcons with ten points and four boards in the frame.

In the second half, Worcester State never relinquished its lead, despite the Falcons staying within one or two baskets for a majority of the period. Frankian lifted the Lancers with ten second half points, while Jennings added six points and eight caroms in the frame. The Falcons were limited to just 17.9% shooting in the second half with Cote paving the way with seven points.

For the game, Worcester State finished 40.0% from the floor (22-of-55), while holding Fitchburg State to just 27.8% shooting on the afternoon. The Lancers grabbed a slim 40-39 margin on the boards, while causing 20 Falcons turnovers with ten steals.

The victory for Worcester State marked the 250th career victory for head coach Karen Tessmer, who is in 20th season with the Lancers.

Fitchburg State will be back in action on Tuesday as it hosts Westfield State at 5:30 p.m.
