Cote and Fluet combine for 40 points in Falcons setback
FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team was in action this evening, dropping a tough 62-58 decision to Framingham State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Parkinson Gymnasium.
Senior Laura Cote led the Fitchburg State offense with a game-best 21 points, 11 rebounds and six steals, while classmate Rebecca Fluet was also strong off the bench, finishing with 19 points, three caroms and three assists.
Sophomore forward Sarah Palace led the offensive charge for the Rams, posting a team-high 17 points, five boards, two assists and two steals, while senior Nicole Bostic concluded the night with a double-double of 15 points and 11 caroms for Framingham State.
In the first half, Framingham State entered the locker room with a ten point advantage (35-25), using a 14 point effort from Palace. The Falcons crawled back from a 12 point deficit early in the half (12-0), stringing together a 7-2 run of their own. Fluet led the Falcon rally, scoring all seven points during the run, en-route to finishing with 12 first half points for Fitchburg State.
In the second half, the Rams extended their advantage, taking a 49-29 lead with 14:45 to play, highlighted by five points from Bostic and four by newcomer Lauren Donahue. Fitchburg State continued to battle however, trimming the deficit to just three (61-58) on a 13-2 stretch that lasted nearly four minutes.
Cote registered five of the 13 points, while Fluet added four during the run, but the Rams would put the game out of reach with a free throw from senior guard Johanna Annunziata with seven seconds remaining in the contest, resulting in the 62-58 final.
For the game, Framingham State held a slim margin on the glass (49-46), while the Falcons caused 19 Ram turnovers with nine steals. Fitchburg State finished 20-of-60 from the field and 14-of-20 from the charity stripe, while the Rams shot 22-of-59 from the floor and just 11-of-32 from the free-throw line.
Fitchburg State (12-7, 3-4 MASCAC) will be back in action on Thursday as it travels to Salem State at 5:30 p.m. Framingham State (12-7, 4-4 MASCAC) will host Bridgewater State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
