Fitchburg State Falls At Colby-Sawyer, 71-40

Schneider collects 12 points for Falcons in non-conference setback

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team was in action this afternoon, dropping a 71-40 decision to the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer at the Dan and Katherine Hogan Sports Center.

The Chargers opened the contest on a 12-2 run as junior Lexi Iannone scored the five of the first seven points of the run, while Amanda Calvo, Jessica Shenkei and Emmani Robinson each added one basket.

Fitchburg State cut the lead down to eight ((14-6) with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter on jumpers by junior Melissa Guglielmello and freshman Hannah Keohan before Colby-Sawyer responded with an 11-0 stretch into the second quarter of play as Shenkei netted five of those 11 points,

The two team would proceed to trade baskets throughout the rest of the half with senior guard Erika Schneider scoring five of her team-leading 12 points in the second quarter, while Iannone netted seven of the Chargers 21 second quarter points as Colby-Sawyer took a 39-19 lead into the break.

Following a three pointer by sophomore Fiona Sugrue (45-23), Colby-Sawyer went on an 8-2 run on a pair of buckets from Calvo and a jumper by Morgan Fogg to extend the Chargers lead to 55-26 going into the final quarter of play.  

In the fourth quarter, the hosts secured their first win of season, outscoring the Falcons 16-14 over the final ten minutes of play, resulting in the 71-40 final

For Fitchburg State, Schneider led the way with 12 points, seven boards and two steals, while Guglielmello added eight points, seven caroms and a pair of steals. Junior Shabelli Villa was also solid for the Falcons, finishing with seven points, four rebounds and two assists.

Iannone paced the Chargers with a game-best 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting as well as four rebounds, five steals, four blocks and one assists, while Calvo added to the mix with 14 points four caroms and one assists off the bench.

Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State shot 23.0% from the field (14-of-61), while the Chargers concluded the contest, shooting 39.5% (30-of-76). Colby-Sawyer controlled the glass as well, holding a slim 51-47 margin in rebounds.

Fitchburg State (0-2, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday as it hosts the Cougars of Clark University at 5:30 p.m. Colby-Sawyer (1-0, 0-0 NAC) will visit Suffolk University on Saturday for a contest starting at 1 p.m.
