Fitchburg State Falls At UMass Boston

Leveillee and Guglielmello combine of 16 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks

BOSTON, Mass. – Fitchburg State University dropped a 65-31 decision to the Beacons of UMass Boston this evening in non-conference women's basketball action at the Clark Athletic Gym.

Fitchburg State was paced by senior forward Stephanie Leveillee with eight points, seven caroms, two steals and three blocks, while junior forward Melissa Guglielmello finished with eight points, four rebounds, one assist, one steal and a block.

For the Beacons, senior forward Olivia Murphy led the charge with a double-double of 17 points, 18 boards as well as two blocks, while junior Katrina Edwards added a double-double of her own, posting 12 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks and one steal.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring with a jumper by Gugleilmello before the Beacons answered with and 11-0 run on a trio of by baskets from Murphy, while  sophomore guard Katie Mathieu knocked down a trey and a layup as UMass Boston took a 17-4 lead after one quarter of play.

In the second quarter, both teams proceed to trade baskets throughout the frame as Leveillee notched four of her eight points in the quarter for the Falcons, while sophomore Grace Geary connected a three baskets for the hosts to make the score 30-14 going into the intermission.

Following the break, the Green and Gold cut the deficit to 15 (21-36) on a jumper by Guglielmello, a Shabeli Villa three pointer and a layup from freshman Hannah Keohan with 6:15 to play as the two squads continued to trade shots through the remaining six minutes of the stanza.

In the final quarter of play, UMass Boston sealed the win, going on an 11-4 stretch to open the fourth frame, led by Edwards seven points, while sophomore Elaine Wright-McCarthy and junior Shyanne Wellington added two points each

Throughout the game, Fitchburg State shot 24.1% on 14-of-58 shooting from the field, while the Beacons went 34.7% for the game on 26-of-75 shooting. UMass Boston also controlled the glass, holding a 60-33 advantage, including a 25-8 margin on the offensive end.

Fitchburg State (0-6, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to the hardwood on Saturday as it hosts the Hawks of Becker College for a contest starting at 1 p.m. UMass Boston (4-0, 0-0 LEC) will host Mount Ida next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
