McTomney and Rose post double-doubles to lead Falcons to non-conference victory
FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team was in action this afternoon, defeating the Bison of Nichols College, 79-64 in non-conference action at the Parkinson Gymnasium to extend the Falcons winning streak to four games.
Nichols College took a 4-2 lead early in the opening quarter on a free throw by senior Brittany Donovan and a three-pointer from sophomore Mekaela Fithian-Giantonio before Fitchbuirg State regained the lead (7-6) following a trey by freshman Emma Thomson.
The Bison responded with a layup by Donovan and a three ball by junior Brooke Packard to take an 11-7 advantage. The Falcons closed out the quarter, going on a 5-0 run as junior Michaela McTomney netted all five points for the Green and Gold for the 19-12 lead.
In the second quarter, the Green and Gold upped its margin (22-12) on a three-point play by newcomer Kyra Rose to start the frame. The Falcons built its lead to 15, following a three-pointer by Thomson to make the score 43-28 before Packard sank a pair from the charity stripe as the Falcons took a 43-30 advantage into the break.
Following the intermission, Fitchburg State added to its lead on a free throw and layup from Rose for the 48-30 advantage. Nichols chipped away add the deficit, cutting the lead to 50-43 on a free throw from sophomore Callie Andrew that capped a 9-0 run for the Bison.
In the final frame, the Falcons went on a 9-1 stretch as freshman Catherine Coppinger and sophomore Mercy Frimpong connected a pair of three balls to spark the run for the Green and Gold, en-route to the 79-64 final.
Fitchburg State was led by Rose, who posted a game-best 20 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal, while McTomney added a double-double of 19 points and 12 boards to go along with four assists and one steal.
For the Bison, senior Taylor Daniels posted a team-best 14 points, four caroms, three assists and two steals, while the trio of Packard (12), Donovan (13) and sophomore Amy Assad (12) reached double figures as well for Nichols.
Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State shot 29-of-81 (35.8%) from the field and 31.6% (12-for-38) from downtown, while Nichols finished 24-for-70 (34.3%) overall 21.7% (5-of-23) from beyond the arc.
Fitchburg State (5-3, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Westfield State to take on the Owls at 7:30 p.m. Nichols (1-8, 0-0 CCC) will visit Gordon College on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. start time.
