Fitchburg State Upended By Colby-Sawyer, 71-58

Rose ties Falcons single game scoring mark with 39 points in non-conference setback 

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team was in action this afternoon, dropping a 71-58 decision to the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer in non-conference play at the Parkinson Gymnasium.

Fitchburg State raced out to an early 9-2 lead in the opening quarter on a pair of three balls from freshman Kyra Rose, while classmate Emma Thomson added a trey of her own. Colby-Sawyer cut the deficit to 9-7 after layups by seniors Lexi Iannone and Ally Mignault to make the score 9-7.

The Falcons answered back as senior Melissa Guglielmello drained a three-pointer, while sophomore Amy Connolly converted  a jumper to make the score 19-9 after ten minutes of play.

In the second quarter, the Green and Gold extended it margin (21-10) after a layup from Rose before the Chargers went on a 15-2 run with three points coming from freshman Lexie Hamilton, junior Alex Danas and classmate Amanda Calvo for the 25-23 lead.

The two teams traded baskets to close out the half with Calvo and freshman Tianna Sugars netting the buckets for Colby-Sawyer, while Rose collected both baskets for the Falcons as the Chargers took a 31-29 margin into the break.

Following the intermission, Colby-Sawyer upped its lead to 37-29 as sophomore Kristin Ellis hit a pair of jumpers, while Mignault added a layup. The Chargers ended the third quarter with a 53-40 lead following a layup by Sugars with just under a minute remaining in the frame.

In the final stanza, the visitors went up by as many as 17 (62-45) after a three-pointer by Calvo before the Falcons chipped away at the lead, cutting the margin to 67-58 as Rose knocked down a free-throw, but that's as close as Fitchburg State would get, resulting in the 71-58 final.

Rose led all scorers  with a game-best 39 points as well as four rebounds and two steals, while Guglielmello added six points and two caroms for the Green and Gold. For the Chargers, Calvo netted a team-leading 19, 12 rebounds, two assists and four steals, while Iannone (14), Mignault (10) and Sugars (10) all reached double figures as well for Colby-Sawyer.

With her 39 points, Rose tied a Fitchburg State women's basketball scoring record, set by former Falcon forward Amy Fahey on November 22, 2011, when she scored 39 points for the Falcons in a 76-72 win over UMass Boston.

Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State shot 21-for-63 (33.3%) from the field and 25.9% (7-of-27) from three point range, while Colby-Sawyer finished 28-of-71 (39.4%) overall and 20.0% (4-for-20) from downtown. 

Fitchburg State (5-5, 0-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Bridgewater State to take on the Bears at 7:30 p.m. Colby-Sawyer (9-3, 4-1 NAC) will visit Castleton State on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. start time.
