Fitchburg State Defeated By Bridgewater State, 85-60

Rose registers game-best 31 points for Falcons in MASCAC setback

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team was in action this evening, dropping an 85-60 decision to the Bears of Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Tinsley Center.

Following a pair of free throws by freshman Kyra Rose, Bridgewater State embarked on a 13-0 run with senior Chelsea Saucier, sophomore Sara DaSilva and freshman Nicole Bostick draining three-pointers (13-2).

Fitchburg State cut into the deficit as freshman Emma Thomson knocked down a trey and classmate Catherine Coppinger connected on a layup to make the score 15-7 before newcomer Kayla Carter netted a pair of buckets to put the Bears up 19-9 after one quarter of play.

In the second quarter, Bridgewater State extended its lead, going on another 13-0 stretch to start the frame (32-9). Saucier sparked the Bears run with six points, while junior Rhiana Page added five of her 11 first half points.

The Falcons closed out the half with a 5-2 run as Rose hit a layup and a free throw, while junior Michaela McTomney connected on a jumper as Bridgewater State took a 42-15 margin into the intermission.

Following the break, the Bears took its largest lead of the contest  (71-32) on a trey by Bostick and free throw from Carter before Rose completed a three-point play for the Falcons to make the score 71-35 going into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth stanza, the Green and Gold continued to battle, going on a 13-3 run as senior Briana Pelton and Thomson buried three balls, while Rose connected on a layup and three free throws (83-55).

Bridgewater State ended its scoring draught when freshman Elise McGovern connected on a jumper before Thomson drilled her fifth three-pointer on the evening for the Falcons, resulting in the 85-60 final.

Rose led the way for Fitchburg State with a game-best 31 points, 16 rebounds and three assists, while Thomson chipped in with 17 points, one board, one steal and a pair of assists for the Green and Gold.

For Bridgewater State, Page registered a team-leading 15 points, four caroms, one assist and one steal, while Bostick added 15 points, two boards, one assist and one steal for the Bears.

Throughout the contest Fitchburg State shot 17-for-61 (27.9 %) from the field and (6-of-28) 21.4% from beyond the arc, while Bridgewater State finished 31-of-61 (50.8%) from the field and (13-for-24) 54.2% downtown.

Fitchburg State (5-6, 0-2 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it visits Worcester State to take on the Lancers for a contest starting at 3 p.m. Bridgewater State (5-9, 1-1 MASCAC) will travel to Salem State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
