Rose and Kone reach double figures in Falcons to non-conference victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team defeated the Eagles of Green Mountain College, 67-27 in non-conference action this evening at the Parkinson Gymnasium.

Fitchburg State opened the contest on a 27-3 run in the first quarter of play as freshman Catherine Coppinger knocked down a pair of treys, while classmate Allysa Rivera added five points. Sophomore Amy Connolly, classmate Mercy Frimpong, senior Shabeli Villa and newcomer Kyra Rose chipped in with four point each for the Falcons throughout the run.

In the second frame, the Green and Gold added to its lead on a bucket from newcomer Aicha Kone before Green Mountain answered with four straight points by freshman Lane Trammell to cut the lead to 29-7.

The Eagles continued to battle as freshman Taylor Hill and sophomore Mercedes Rideout hit baskets before Fitchburg State closed out the half with a jumper from senior Melissa Guglielmello and three-pointer by newcomer Emma Thomson to make  score 39-11 going into the break.

Following the intermission, the Green and Gold extended its margin (43-11) on a pair of layups from Rose. Green Mountain responded as sophomore Suzanna Moses connected on a three ball, while senior Casie Sharp and Trammell added one basket each to cut the deficit to 50-18 after three quarters of play.

In the fourth stanza, the hosts built upon its advantage (56-18) on a pair of jumpers from Rose and a Kone layup before Hill buried a trey for the Eagles to cut the lead to 56-21. Fitchburg State secured its sixth win on the season as Kone and junior Holly Wentworth connected on buckets, resulting in the 67-27 final.

Fitchburg State was paced by Rose, who netted a game-best 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Kone added ten points and two assist off the bench. Connolly was also solid for the Falcons with eight points, four boards and a pair of blocks.

For Green Mountain, Trammel led the way with eight points and four rebounds, while Rideout and Hill combined for 14 points, 16 boards and three assist for the Eagles.

Throughout the game, Fitchburg State shot 29-for-88 (33.0%) from the field and (6-of-44) 13.6% from downtown, while Green Mountain finished 10-of-67 (14.9%) overall and just (3-for-26) from beyond the arc.

Fitchburg State (6-7, 0-3 MASCAC) hosts MCLA on Wednesday night in a MASCAC tilt starting at 7:30pm. Green Mountain (0-12, 0-8 NAC) will be back in action on Wednesday as well as they host the Mariners of Maine Maritime at 7:30 p.m.
