Marquez nets 11 points for Falcons in MASCAC setback
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team suffered a tough 99-44 setback to the Rams of Framingham State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at the Athletics and Recreation Center.
Framingham State opened a 7-0 lead to start the contest on buckets from senior Sarah Palace and classmate Alycia Rackliffe as well as trey by junior Raegan Mulherin before Fitchburg State answered with a jumper from sophomore Amy Connolly and a layup by freshman Kyra Rose (7-4).
Following a pair of free-throws by Rose, the Rams upped its lead (36-11) after one quarter of play as sophomore Tiphani Harris hit a pair of jumper, while junior Quinn O'Connell and Rackliffe added one basket each.
After baskets from freshman Catherine Coppinger and junior Michaela McTomney cut the deficit to 37-15 to start the second quarter, Framingham State extended its margin, going on an 18-1 run en-route to a 62-19 advantage after 20 minutes of play.
In the second half, the Green and Gold went on an 8-2 run with Rose registering four points, while Coppinger and senior Shabeli Villa added one basket each to cut the lead to 70-30. Framingham State answered back with a 7-1 stretch to close out the frame with newcomer Emily Velozo connecting on a free-throw to cap the run for the Rams (89-39).
In the final stanza, Framingham State took its largest lead of the contest (95-38) on a pair of free throws from Harris before the Falcons closed out the scoring in the contest as McTomney and senior Melissa Guglielmello scored the final six points for Fitchburg State, resulting in the 99-44 final.
Fitchburg State was paced by freshman Jaliannette Marquez with a team-leading 11 points, five rebounds and three assists off the bench, while Rose added nine points, four caroms, two assists and one block.
For Framingham State, Rackliffe posted a game-best 24 points, ten rebounds, one assists and two steals, while Harris chipped in with 14 points, seven rebounds and one block for the Rams.
In the contest, Fitchburg State shot 14-for-68 (20.6%) from the field and (15-of-22) 68.2% from the charity stripe, while Framingham State finished 49.3% (36-of-73) overall and 19-for-24 (79.2%) from the free throw line.
Fitchburg State (8-9, 1-5 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it hosts the Owls of Westfield State for a contest starting at 1 p.m. Framingham State (15-3, 5-1 MASCAC) will travel to Salem State to take on the Vikings on Saturday at 3 p.m.
