Rose nets double-double of 17 points and ten rebounds for Falcons in MASCAC setback
FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team was in action this afternoon, dropping a tough 108-55 decision to the Owls of Westfield State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Parkinson Gymnasium.
Fitchburg State was paced by freshman Kyra Rose with a game-leading 17 points, ten rebounds, two assists, three blocks and four steals, while senior Shabeli Villa added 12 points, two caroms, one assist and two steals.
For Westfield State, sophomore Lucy Barrett finished with game-high 17 points, three rebounds and two steals, while senior Kirsy Segarra chipped in with 15 points, two rebounds and three steals for the Owls.
In the opening quarter of play, Fitchburg State took an 8-4 lead just three minutes into the game on a three ball by Villa and a pair of free throws from Rose. Westfield State answered back with a 6-0 run late in the frame as Barrett connected on a pair of jumpers, while senior Jill Valley added a bucket for the 26-15 edge after ten minutes of play.
Following a layup by Rose, Westfield State went on a 12-2 stretch, keyed by Segerra's six points, while Sanchez, Valley and freshman Chelsea Moussette added two points each as the Owls took a 62-31 lead into halftime.
After the break, both teams traded baskets before the visitors embarked on an 11-3 run to take an 82-42 lead before freshman Allysa Rivera halted the Owls run, draining a three ball from the right elbow (82-45).
In the final stanza, the Falcons cut into the deficit (87-51) as junior Holly Wentworth knocked down a pair of free throws, while Rose added a free throw and layup. Westfield State closed out the contest with an 11-0 run, sparked by sophomore Lauren Carnevale's five points, resulting in the 108-55 final.
Throughout the game, Fitchburg State shot 30.5% (18-for-59) from the field and 6-of-23 (26.1%) from beyond the arc, while Westfield State finished 43.8% (39-of-89) overall and 8-for-32 (25.0%) from three point range.
Fitchburg State (8-10, 1-6 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Lasell College to take on the Lasers for a contest starting at 7 p.m. Westfield State (13-6, 7-0 MASCAC) will visit Williams College on Monday at 7 p.m.
